Description mcanedo 2005-08-10 18:09:31 UTC
Hi:
Calc should have a select only visible cells as excel does.

I know that it's doable if the hidden cells come from a filter. But that is not
enought.

That option should be extended to scheamas and manual hidden.

Regards,
Miguel

Hi Miguel,

please be more precise. I've checked it with manual hiden rows and columns and
was not able to select these cell with the cursor or the mouse.

Please describe step by step what you want to do.

Thanks

Frank

Hi Frank:
Excel has a button, wich certainly is not by default in the toolbars, but that
can be added to any toolbar, it's called "Select Visible Cells".
This button selects only the visible cells no matter ohow they have been
hidden, then you can copy, delete, or whatever action, with those cells only.
Thanks
Miguel

Additional information - the feature in Excel that selects only visible cells
is called via Edit > Go To. Click Special. Click Visible Cells Only. Click
OK.
Dear developers please consider such feature as it would make certain tasks
much easier.

Simply selecting visible cells will not be enough. The ability to copy those
visible cells, or cut them, or move them is what makes Select Visible useful.
Currently the copy function cannot be used with multiple selections. For
instance, a subtotal is done, the groups are collapsed so only the totals show,
then Select Visible is used to select just the totals, then these are copied
and pasted onto another sheet.

The "OOo Later" target milestone has me worried that the weight of this feature
is undervalued.

If it had not been for the lack of this feature I would have trashed Excel long
ago. The lack of this is all that's holding me back.

Real world problems:
Report Subtotaled from hundreds of values and your boss only cares about the
totals. He wants them in an email.

Subtotals of measurement collections need to be transferred to another sheet for
further processing.

Examples are from previous and current work experience.

This feature is Highly essential.

This previous commenter said it perfectly.

"Real world problems:

I need the visible data from subtotals!!! I need visible data from manually
selected rows or columns.

Please fix this so Excel can die!

Confirming that this problem still exists.

Let me offer a new reproducible example of this problem in v4.1.10. When you drag select only the cells which are currently visible (when some rows are hidden), choosing ⌘-C (Mac) copies ALL cells from the sheet to the clipboard, not only those that are visible.

Either the app needs to select only those cells which are visible or add a separate button (like in Excel) to allow for selection of only those rows/columns which are currently visible as Miguel suggested in 2005. It's more intuitive to 'ignore' any cells which are hidden and select only visible cells, but a separate button like what is used in Excel would suffice.

It's frustrating to select only the rows which are showing only to find that pasting the coped data has selected ALL rows from the sheet, not only those which are visible.
