Description haggholm 2005-10-12 04:44:43 UTC
Preliminary note: This is not restricted to a single version of the software; I
have tested and encountered the same problem in OO 1.1.4 (stable) on Solaris 9
and OO 2.0 rc2 on a Linux machine.

OOWriter notes appear very different from the MS Office notes that I expect they
are based upon, leading to unexpected behaviour when editing MS Office formats,
decreased visibility, and confusion when attempting to comment on text blocks.

In MS Office, I am able to select a block of text and insert a "Comment"
(Comment on the Insert menu); the text block is thereby highlighted and a
comment attached to it. In OpenOffice Writer, a "Note" (Insert menu => Note) is
inserted as a yellow highlighted space; that is, a single anchor character--much
less visible than an entire highlighted block. Furthermore, if I attempt to
place a note pertaining to an entire block, as in MS Office, the text I
highlight is DELETED and a Note inserted in its place. This is not the expected
behaviour.

I propose the following: Preferred behaviour would be similar to MS Office: A
Note should be associated with a block of text, which should be highlighted. If
the user highlights text and Inserts a Note, the text should remain and be
associated with the Note; the text should not be deleted. Notes might be deleted
by right-clicking or double-clicking (perhaps with a Delete button in the Edit
Note dialogue window) rather than by deleting the anchor character like a
textual character.

Already in the "Enhancement" database. See issue 5487 and issue 6193.
