Description moali 2002-06-11 10:06:25 UTC
The representation of word-textboxes (when importing a word-document) as frames causes in my oppinion compatibility-problems: Word drawings cannot be handled in the way wanted by the drawer (not able to group them completely - frames cannot be grouped in OO; Not able to select the whole drawing - frames cannot be selected together with lines and so on). This arises some problems when scaling/moving the word drawing: All textboxes/frames have to be moved or scaled seperately (or have to be redrawn within OOo!) --> quite a lot useless work. Yes, but if I did it the other way and imported them as drawing text boxes there would be problems as well, you can't have tables or lists or fields or graphics in the drawing text boxes, and you can't anchor them effectively in headers/footers. So a non grouped drawing text box becomes a frame in writer because that is honestly the best way to do it normally. If the drawing text box is grouped with something else in word then it is imported as a drawing box which is what you want in this particular case, if the various shapes had been already grouped together in word the whole group would have been imported as a grouped set of drawing objects. It is an annoying problem and it is certainly desirable to merge the features of drawing boxes and frames.

ES->CM/MRU: So, what's the conclusion? Redesign = OOo Later?

Yep, I say its design issue for writer itself outside of the filters. A wellknown aggravating problem. I put it on our informal designproblem list recently. cmc->ama: I reassign to you for consideration for future :-)

As long as drawing textboxes in OpenOffice are not capable of storing the same content as MS Office's textboxes, there won't be any 100% import. Drawing Textboxes in MS Office can contain e.g. tables, can be grouped with graphics or OLE's, store Redlines (aka Changes) or be placed in header/footer. Writer is not able to have this in Textboxes. So the drawing textboxes are converted to Writer's frames.

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
