Note: This issue has been previous reported in issue 7819, and a related problem
noted in issue 9202.  Issue 7819 was closed without fixing the problem, "works
for me". Issue 9202 has been downgraded to P4 "not essential anyway".  

To avoid a similar fate, I would like to bring to attention that this issue
severely restricts the usage of OOo in academia, especially math and
engineering. It also renders OOo unusable for publishing engineering papers,
where special attention is paid to equation formatting. It also setback adoption
of OOo in my company, because the managers were not pleased with the look of
equations in the patent application.

I am attaching a picture comparing OOo rendered equation with Latex. 
OOo equation:
 E = m ` f lsup i rsub j ` m'_c
Latex equation:
 E = m\, ^i\!f_j\, m'_c

Notice that in OOo, lsup, rsub, prime and _ are all spaced far away, as though
they are separate variables.

The lsup and rsub commands add the indices with very large spacing compared what
the "normal" sub command (e.g. m sub i) produces. This should be of course
considered to be changed.

OpenOffice.org Issue Tracker - Feedback Request.

has not been updated within the last 2+ years. Please consider re-testing with
one of the latest versions of OOo, as the problem(s) may have already been
addressed. Either use the recent stable version:

The issue still exists and the reason for it is that starmath does not yet
implement kerning (in contrast to the other applications). :-(

I'm going to add my votes for this, FWIW. Also want to make clear the problem
that exists with the 'prime' character in formulae, as we discussed over here:
