While creating a "Impress" template, I didn't find a way to insert a custom background image. I clicked "Format"->"Page", "Background" tab, then I selected in the "Fill" combo box "Bitmap". It is only possible to select an image out of the defaults. There seems to be no way to specify a custom image file. On a related note: same thing with gradients. The colours are predefined. I cannot (for example) take "Gradient 1" and make it go from "red" to "blue". Only default gradients are available.

the wizard lacks the custom functionality. When wanting to add custom backgrounds, gradients etc., choose Format->Area the wizard should also offer to show custom files as backgrounds and custom folders for templates.

Thanks for the "Area" tip... That works. It was not intuitive for me, but once you know...
