Description rabauke 2006-04-08 09:55:12 UTC
In Linux I can copy text to the clipboard by simply selecting text and pasting
it using the middle-click.

If you set-up a table with two cells and have some text in the left one, you
can select it and middle-click into the right-hand cell and the text is pasted
as expected.

However, if you first left-click into the right-hand cell and then use
middle-click, nothing is pasted. It seems that left-click into a cell clears
the clip-boards, i.e. copies an empty string to it.

Expected behaviour would be to paste the selected content into the right-hand
cell, even if the cursor was first placed into it with a left-click.

Has nothing to do with tables...

Middle-click pastes the selection-clipboard. OOo clears the selection when there
is no highlighted text anymore (i.e. "nothing" is selected/highlighted, so
"nothing" will be pasted).

Other applications (and the main part of OOo as well) don't clear the selection
clipboard when the cursor is positioned elsewhere (but they clear the selection
itself, the highlighting).

OOo should behave the same throughout → confirming.
selection Clipboard doesn't exist on windows → OS set to Unix,X11

Already works as expected in Text-Drawing objects in Impress and Calc, thus I
assume it is a defect in writer. (If you set to enhancement without refering to
this, I'll reset back to defect)

Reassigned to ES.

ES->Cloph: I do not agree with the "defect":
1) Exception
- insert a Draw text box (in any app)
- type some text in it
- select it
- go out of the box
- X-Paste
-> yes it works!

2. "Normal" non-Unix-like-own-OOo-behavior:
a)
- Select a Draw rectangle (in any app)
- Unselect it
- X-Paste
-> Nothing

b) in Calc, select a cell with content
- Unselect it
- X-Paste
-> Nothing

Yes this is an OOo "speciality" but not a defect of one App.

Reassigned to Requirements

This is definitely a defect and unexpected behaviour. Other applications, such
as the Firefox web browser and the Kate text editor do not clear the selection
when the selected text is deselected.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open new Writer window, type "Hello, world!", and press enter 10 times
2) Highlight the word "Hello"
3) Move the mouse pointer down a line or two and press the middle mouse button
4) See the text "Hello" pasted where the mouse cursor is
5) Now click somewhere on the screen to remove the highlight from the original
"Hello"
6) Move the mouse slightly below the second "Hello" and middle click
7) See that there is nothing pasted
