Description cbelch 2002-07-29 15:03:54 UTC
Hi, I am not sure if I have selected the correct component to enter this issue. If not I apologise. My users would like to know if there are any plans to enhance the quick starter tool so that you can add your own shortcuts to other programs. They are so used to using the MS Office tool bar in this way that they would miss this facility if we were to start using Open Office. Thanks, Cheryl Belch

SBA: Changed component to framework as it affects all apps alike. Reassigned to Christian.

Interesting idea. I think it would fit into the proposal Carsten Driesner recently announced in discuss@ooo or users@ooo or firstname.lastname@example.org (not sure at the moment): http://framework.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?dcID=536&action=download This talks about integrating external components into the tools menu and the tool box, I think integrating them into the quickstarter is a logical consequence. Cheryl, you may want to mention this in a response to Carstens posting (where he asked for contributions and discussion). If you have trouble finding it, please tell me, I could have a look myself ....

I would very much like a recently used files section on the quickstarter, especially as documents opened OOo don't seem to register on the main Windows 2000 document menu. (thinks: is this a bug to report?) The suggested method of adding in customisations is interesting, too. But would it mean that the iicons to launch individual programs could be added to toolbars? I think it should; but the proposal at present reads as if there would be one toolbar icon, launching a drop-down menu from which one made sub-selections. I think that's needlessly inflexible, though it works well for menus. But I might very well want to have one icon to launch my Pim, for example.

Cheryl, http://api.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?msgId=399495&listName=dev is the mail where the proposal was announced. I think it would have fit into users@ooo as well, but .... I think the author will have an open ear for your concerns :) about adding the files to the system's "recently used files" list - I think this is a bug. I darkly remember I heard about it, but do not remember an IZ id ... Frank

Hi Frank, Thanks for the link! I have had a look at the proposal and mailed Carsten with my thoughts. Cheryl ;o)

I would like to have this discussion in the newsgroup where I added my proposal so everybody can add his/her comments. My proposal defines a way to integrate external components, that means uno components which implement special interfaces to extent the functionality of the Office. There was no intention to support external executables. There are some security issues which can arise supporting this. We already solved security issues that allowed bad documents to provide hyperlinks which executes "del *.*" on a certain folder. As I mentioned in my proposal our approach is only a minor addition to the Office but makes it possible to provide uno component functions to user. I known that our approach is not the real flexible and fully customizeable user interface, that would solve all your requests. From our point of view this is not possible for OpenOffice 1.1 as our time frame limited. I hope that we can solve this for the next major OpenOffice version.

The quick starter OOo 2.0 seems to go in the opposite direction offering no features.
Comment 10 brendel 2005-04-14 13:32:52 UTC
I#M also very astoiched that in OO2.0 beta 1.9.87) there seem to be no other options with right-clicking on the quickstarter icon than "load at startup" or " exit quickstarter". I could not find any information if menu items to open different components were omitted in 2.0 consciously or if this is a bug, but I'm really missing this way of opening a new document.

I would love to see the ooo MRU inside the ooo quick launcher...

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on my owner to the owner "requirements".
