applet in writer document none

Description alex.thurgood 2006-09-03 14:10:44 UTC
hi all,

I tried inserting an applet from the Java 1.5 installation on my system into a
Writer document via the Insert > Object > Applet menu.

The applet doesn't work. When you double-click on the object, you get an error
message "Error activating object. General OLE error"

Attaching test document.

I believe that applets were disabled at one point recently for security reasons, and won't be enabled again.
Please see http://www.openoffice.org/security/CVE-2006-2199.html for more information.

@smsm1 : Yes, it would seem so, thanks for the pointer.

In that case, this possibility should be removed from the menu structure, so
there's still a defect just in it still being possible to insert an applet via
the menus, otherwise what would be the point of disabling it ?

Yes, Java applets have been disabled due to security issues. See issue 66862 for
further information.

MRU->MH: how do we proceed on with this? Some UI changes wikll be needed for
this. I do not think, that we completely want to do without Java applets, so
perhaps the "Security" options must be extended.

The plan is to let this feature fade out of the product, so the decision was to
keep the feature in the product but offer no UI to enable it.
If there is a strong demand for this feature (what are the use cases ?) we can
offer an UI for this setting and let the feature in.

Hello, I'd like to share a "case study", where applets within documents are
really good and needed feature. Whole thing is in OOoForum:
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=59878, but here's the most
important part:

"Personally I find including applets very useful thing. In my case I would like
to use it for drawing very specific charts. It would be cool to include small
chart previews in the document according to data listed in some table(s). For
instance I have a series of measure points, some given values and I need to draw
a tangent lines to chart's fragments interpolated (by polynomal of mostly 2nd
degree) trough selected nodes from the orignal series. I need also to draw guide
lines to tangent points and to place the tan() value in the text as the result
of calculation. There are more thing I need my chart applet to draw and
calculate (like drawing a graphical "sum" of two data series along given axis,
finding switching point (where x==y) in the data series and showing it on the
diagram, etc). My applet does all that, but without the ability to insert it
into the document it becomes real pain in the *** to catch the output from
appletviewer, convert it to bitmapgraphic, include it in the document, copy
calculation results into to the document by hand and to repeat it for different
set of data or when some values do change. I do not even mention, that printing
it from bitmap looks rather ugly".

Best regards,
cmx
