Description mux2005 2007-07-04 09:17:52 UTC
Attached is a presentation created with an earlier version of OOo (I think 2.1).
When opening this file in OOo 2.2.1 the pictures in the Notes view are broken.
Letters turn into unreadable blobs (see attached screenshot). Even worse is that
this affects the printout, too. Switching between Notes and Normal view and/or
editing the text can temporarily fix an image (proving that the actual image
data that is still intact but OOo performs some weird transformation on it for
display and printing), but switching to a different slide will break things
again. In any case, I have not managed to get a readable printout of the
complete Notes.

This issue is quite critical for us. We have several of these presentations
where the printout of the Notes is essential, because it forms the basis for
courses held in-house. Since we have so far not found a workaround or a way to
quickly fix the affected documents, it is possible that this will block our
ability to upgrade to OOo versions > 2.1.
Furthermore, compatibility issues such as this undermine our internal efforts to
establish OpenDocument as the format of choice.

If someone knows of a way to fix the documents in question, please post it, even
if it requires manipulating the XML inside the ODP (we can do that with a script
to fix many documents in batch).

I checked with "2.2.1 Multilingual German version WIN XP: [680m18(Build9161)]"
and can confirm the reported effects, but I was not able to reproduce that with
an own Presentation created with "2.0.2 German version WIN XP:
[680m5(Build9011)]" and never saw that with own IMPRESS documents.

'Kapitel_XX_Muster.odp' looks fine when I open it with 2.0.2

Currently I can not decite whether it's a problem with 2.2.1 or with mux2005's
old OOo version.

The problem remains when I save 'Kapitel_XX_Muster.odp' with 2.0.2 and reopen it
with 2.2.1.

@mux2005:
Please specify your OS and Platform.

Can you give any hints how to create an own presentation document with broken
images?

Set to new and change the target.

I can reproduce the bug.
When I switch to the normal view and switch back into the notesview the graphics
looks correct.
in my mind a refresh is missing.
Please have a look.

@rainerbielefeld:
Since I have not created this document I can't give you details on how it was
done (only that it was under Windows). And I don't see why that's important.
Compatibility needs to be maintained. If some version of OOo writes broken ODPs,
then all later versions have to be able to read those broken ODPs. That may not
be pretty from a technical standpoint but it's a major requirement of end users.
And if OOo is not committed to this, it will not only hurt OOo but the whole
OpenDocument format. Users want the reassurance that they will be able to use
todays documents 10 years from now. What I'm currently seeing is that we're
unable to use OpenDocument files created 1 year ago. You can imagine how that
improves my confidence in the format.

Changing OS back to all, since I'm seeing the problem on Linux.

Basically, this is a feature. In slide sorter and notes view images are
displayed via a lower resolution preview. However, in the bugdoc this looks
really scary.

@sj: Can we use a preview with increased resolution?
