Description omlx 2007-07-11 20:53:11 UTC
hi all.
sometimes we need a way to create pdf file with reversed pages order (i.e. the
last page comes as first page and the first becomes the last page) like
printing a document with reversed pages option.

best regards
omlx

confirm

mmp: Any opinions on this ? Or maybe even a spec ;-) ?

MMP>PL: well, seems esoteric to me. But I believe that the request is valid.
Philipp, can you imagine an extension infrastructure for such "special features"?
Comment 3 philipp.lohmann 2007-07-12 12:41:26 UTC
That depends on what you mean by extension. If you think of a special extension
for this specific feature, the effort would be way higher than to simply put it
into the regular PDF export. If you are worried about UI clutter (granted, the
dialog is already quite heavy) we could hide this and some other UI elements
behind a "advanced features" button.

yes, you got the idea. I know a little bit about the 3rd party development
around InDesign. You wouldn't believe what features are developed (as plugins to
InDesign) to streamline the professional production process of magazines and
newspapers.
Having a PDF back to front (for what ever purpose) is the tip of the iceberg.

Another rule of thumb: PDF Export should provide equivalent features as
printing. There we have in Options something like "Reversed" and "Brochure"

This is an argumanet to implement such an PDF Reversed feature.

I dont like it - Somebody requested it - someone voted for it - rule of thumb
says: do it - so you get my approval.

Do we have an idea where to put it? A 5th tab??

In printing reverse is most often used to implement manual Duplex for printers
that do not have a duplexer; you print every second page, turn the paper around,
feed the stack back to the printer and print in reverse order.

A new tab page would solve the problem for now, but in the end this would
probably mean a dialog monster like format->character at some point. Perhaps
this could be the first dialog to be changed so that the tab control is a
dropdown listbox instead ? This would at least prevent the tab clutter problem.

wrt/ reverse order in printing
oops, even the help did not explain it this way.

wrt/ an additional tab.
A wizard might be the best way out. It has room for 8 panels. And the user can
immediately press Finish to skip all other steps.

Or an hybrid design. A simple dialog with just the factory settings ( 3 to 5
variations ) and an extended dialog for thrill seekers.
