currently, double-clicking a gallery item shows preview of it, which i think 
is not useful/intuitive. 

it should insert the gallery item into the document where the cursor is 
placed. (and maybe even close the gallery window too :-) 

maybe add some options for this kind of behavior in the tool-->options dialog?

What application do you mean?
I guess you mean writer or calc because in Impress and draw you have only the
mouse pointer so you can't insert the gallery object to the position of the cursor.

that's right (sorry) i meant Writer (also Calc)

Currently this works as designed. But I agreem this might be more intuitive.
