Description colinfinck 2007-10-21 13:39:13 UTC
The Autocorrection features I can activate in Tools --> Autocorrect don't work
for me anymore in Writer, since I updated to OpenOffice 2.3.

For example, if I type (c), this should usually be changed to ©, but it isn't.
Typing *Test* or _Test_ also does not format these texts bold or italic.
Of course, these features are activated in the Options dialog.

In Calc, the features work properly.
I installed OpenOffice under Windows XP Professional SP2 using the package
"OOo_2.3.0_Win32Intel_install_de.exe".

It works fine here. Therefore I guess, that a setting is wrong. Has the
paragraph got a language or is it [None]?
Comment 2 michael.ruess 2007-10-23 09:35:36 UTC
Reassigned to SBA.
Comment 3 colinfinck 2007-10-23 21:38:01 UTC
This problem occurs with every document, also new ones created when Writer is
started or existing ones I created with older versions of OpenOffice (in which
this feature still worked properly).

When I click Tools --> Options --> Language Settings --> Languages, I see that
"German (Germany)" is selected as the default language for new documents there.
But the problem also still exists if I change the language to i.e. "English
(Great Britain)" for the current document.
So for me it looks like this problem is independent of the document language.

You should test, whether the error occurs, if you start OOo as a new user. If
the autocorrection is OK for the new user, then something is wrong in your user
settings.
To start as "new" user you can rename your user directory, so that OOo will not
find it. Then OOo will generate a fresh on. After the test you can delete this
new one and rename you original user directory back.
Or, if OOo is installed for all users, you can define a new Windows user and
login to Windows as that user.

Indeed, if I rename my existing "user" directory and let OpenOffice create a new
one, the problem is gone.

But as I just upgraded from OpenOffice 2.2.1, my old settings should still work,
so I think this should be considered as a bug anyway.

I would volunteer to compare the new settings created by OpenOffice 2.3 with my
old user settings if you think this would be helpful.
If so, please tell me, which files in the "user" directory could cause such a
behaviour, so I can compare them.

SBA-> colinfinck: Please keep your renamed user directory.
Confirming this issue. I recently helped a colleague having this problem.
Deleting the user profile did help him, too, but we didn't keep a copy :-(

SBA->OS: To dig deeper into this, please tell wich files from the user directory
might show the problem so that the issue submitter can attach them (or mail them
directly in case of possible confidential content).
Comment 7 stefan.baltzer 2007-10-24 15:58:36 UTC
Add myself ton CC list.
Comment 8 Oliver Specht 2007-10-25 06:38:03 UTC
The AutoCorrection configuration is located in
../user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Common.xcu (tree: AutoCorrect)
../user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Writer.xcu (tree: AutoFunction)

->colinfinck: You can either attach both files completely or just copy the trees
mentioned above.
The interesting part looks like:
<node oor:name="AutoFunction">
... some <node oor:name="...">...</node> pairs
</node>
Comment 9 colinfinck 2007-10-25 14:19:36 UTC
I attached a ZIP file, which contains these parts from my old configuration files.

From what I see, it looks like AutoCorrection is completely disabled there, but
I'm sure that it was enabled in OpenOffice 2.2 and that I never disabled this
feature.

colinfinck->You have to switch on Format/AutoFormat/While typing.

@os:
Yes, this solves the problem for me.

But please tell me why it worked before the update to OpenOffice 2.3. In my
opinion, an update shouldn't change such settings.
Also note that sba had the same problem.
