With 300_m5 on a MacBook Pro you do get a preview window.

Insert -> File -> click on a presentation file
On the right will be a preview of the document selected. A "more info" button is below the preview. If you click on "more info", there is a preview in that pop up window also.

If you choose a .ppt file, it is a preview of the first page of the document.
If you choose a .odp file, it is the .odp icon

then you select "open" and the insert slides/object menu appears.

When I took similar steps on Windows XP and on OpenSUSE 11.0 with OOo300_m7, no
previews were visible.

I wonder if the preview that lhamm is seeing is somehow provided by the
operating system file chooser dialog.

The file chooser dialogs on Windows XP and on OpenSUSE 11.0 look like the system
provided file chooser dialogs (WIndows, and GNOME in my case) and neither of
those system provided dialogs has a thumbnail.

I've attached a screen shot of the Windows and OpenSUSE file chooser dialog from
OOo300_m7.

There is no preview or thumbnail of a slide to be inserted.

I am able to confirm that, using Windows XP with versions DEV300m106 and OOO330m20 of Impress, there is no preview or thumbnail available when inserting a file.
I took the following steps:

1. Took the menu path Insert>File...
2. Upon clicking File..., the Windows file browser appeared.
Note: There is no preview available here either.
3. Double clicked a .odp file to insert.
4. The Insert Slides/Objects window appeared.
5. No preview or thumbnail was available for any of the items on the list.
Note: The results were the same for .ppt and .pptx files.

lbhamm stated that the MacBook Pro has built-in preview feature. Speaking as a Windows user, I think a preview should be added for individual slides in the Insert Slides/Object window anyway. As my attachment shows, the subunits of the .odp file to be inserted are implicitly labelled (Title 1, Subtitle 2, etc). Having a preview available for each individual slide would keep me from having to guess about the content of the object I am about to insert.

Here's my two cents. My environment as follows:

MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1.7601 SP1)
Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz
Apache OO 4.0.1 Finnish

I replicated the original steps by mikeymikemike and the more recent steps by Andrew Gamez, and I was able to reproduce this. No thumbnails are shown when importing slides in Impress.

I had planned follow-up tests for more contemporary files such as pptx, OS variations and going deeper into the preview "weakness", but I consider this bug to be quite obvious and needs to be fixed before any follow-up tests take place.

I was able to both replicate and fix the issue on my Macbook Pro OS X 10.9.2 with OO v4.1.0.

It appears that on a Mac, you can edit the view settings to show the full icon or description and preview. Through editing these settings, I was both able to see and remove the preview feature.

Steps to reproduce:
1.	Open Open Office
2.	Create New Blank Presentation
3.	From the file menu, Click ‘Insert’ > File.
4.	Scroll/Find the intended document
5.	Change view settings using icons along the top of the pop up window)
6.	Preview becomes visible and removed accordingly.

Further testing showed that this is also possible with OO Writer as well as Impress, also Microsoft Word and PowerPoint (Microsoft Office 2008) with Mac OS X 10.9.2.

Previewing the inserted file can help the user to assess whether the correct file has been selected which can save time and effort (and frustration).
