As described in bug http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=59551 the combining of text boxes changes them to bezier curves before combining. This is intentional. However from usability point of view it's not very useful. The combined boxes should become instead a normal text box with all the text in the boxes that were combined joined together by newlines.

This an obvious thing to do when combining text boxes instead of converting them to curves. Whether the boxes (2 or more) being combined are overlapping or not, the combined text box should be from x,y min to x,y max of the original selected group. Should the text be joined with a paragraph break between each text block, or as a single text stream? I think the latter may prove more useful.

I ended up resolving this with a macro found here: https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/question/178518/get-selected-text-boxes-and-combine-into-one/?answer=178571#post-id-178571
