Button to be removeable in ODF Notification none

Description tserries 2009-01-07 19:30:11 UTC
When opening ODF files saved with OOo 3 with OOo 2.4 a dialog is shown that
informs the user about the newer ODF version of the file. This dialog includes
the option to perform an online update; even if the online update feature is not
installed.

There should not be a hint to the online update function if this feature is not
installed. Additionally the user should be able to remove this option from
future dialogs when opening newer ODF files. The system administrator should be
able to deactivate the online update feature globally; even when opening an ODF
file in a new format version.

This feature should be included in a new OOo 2.4.x version if there will be one.

@ all: This issue is only valid for OOo 2.4.3. I don't think that that we will
have UI changes for this minor update.

This is a bug accordning to the spec. See section 3 of
http://specs.openoffice.org/appwide/onlineupdate/ODF_Online_Update_Trigger.odt

@MD: Please decide if we want this fix for 2.4.3. PB was the developer of the
feature.

There are no plans for any UI and string changes for future 2.x.y releases.
Thus I don't think we will fix this issue.

Regarding the issue itself, it's the second time I read about the confusion
about the ODF Notify / Warning message and the issue that it sounds like it has
a relation to the Online Update.

I don't see this connection. The ODF Notify should warn users about loosing
informations. Of course the solution is to get a newer version which fully
supports the corresponding file format, but thats the only connection to Online
Update.

When people install the Office without Online Update module, they still should
get the ODF Notify as it is implemented.

Regarding the idea to make the ODF Notify optional, for example by adding a
checkbox to not remind users again, thats a good idea.

Frank, you should consider this for a future 3.x release for the time when we
change the format again sometime in future.
Comment 4 tserries 2009-01-09 12:17:55 UTC
@md: My intention is to disable the online update feature in a centrally managed
environment where the user must not install any software. Therefore it is
necessary, not to offer the user a way to install a new version of OpenOffice;
even (or better: especially) if the online update feature is not installed on a
system.

The ODF Notification may be shown to inform the user about possibly "strage
effects".

The left button in the ODF Notification (see attachment, german release) should
be removed if the system administrator wants to disable online updates.

@all: I think it could be usefull to put this feature (slightly modified) to all
OOo versions (2.4.3, 3.x and all future releases): OpenOffice should show the
ODF notification (without online update option) everytime the ODF-version of the
file is higher that the version supported by the current OpenOffice version;
just to be safe for the future. Imagine, in future there might be an other
application producing ODF 1.3 (or higher) when OOo does not support ODF version
1.3 or higher yet.
