The document is displayed correctly referring to its xml code. The two numbered
paragraphs represent two independent lists.
Do you remember how you came to the shown situation? The bug must be somewhere
on the way to this xml code...

MRU->OD: what do you think about this?

***No. It just happened in a large document (maybe 60 or 100k), which I trimmed
to show you the problem.

*** I know! I thought you could analyze (on the very small document) how it
does... In fact, I do not even understand why you ask 'how I came into...'.
Writer should be able to process a file without knowing its origin. As you may
have guessed, I don't know anything about xml code. Sorry.

My investigation reveals nothing new compared to MRU's analysis:
The two paragraphs are in two independent lists. Each list has its own counter
for each list level. 

OD->tab:
- Is it possible to attached the original document? Probably an analysis of this
document would give deeper insight. (If the document is confidential, you can
send it via mail directly to MRU or to me - be sure that it is treated confidential)
- In the original document, are there paragraphs between these two paragraphs,
which are bulleted/numbered with another list style?
- Do you remember what kind of actions do you applied in the original document
before the "wrong" numbering appears? E.g., cut-and-paste/copy-and-paste of
paragraphs, moving of paragraphs, save in ODF 1.1 file format and reload, ...

TAB: no. But here is another file with bad numbering. Go to last page of
BadNum3c: item following 'c' is 'b'. Both are Numbering3,level 4.
One thing I know: this document was converted from MSWord, and the styles were
changed by search&replace.

The new document also only shows, that there are two separate lists, though same
list style.
Find&replace was a good idea, but this mechanism also seems to work fine.
But a good thing could be the import... I think, that importing the original doc
might have a glitch, so it would be helpful if someone could provide the
original doc file.

PS This reporting software is annoying: I wrote the above 'Additional comments'
before sending the new attachment; when I returned, these Additional comments
had vanished!

MRU->OD: as one can see. The import already is faulty.
The outline should be: Level 1 and 2 - no style, level 3 - "Question0", level 4
"Question a", level 5 "Question a0", level 6 - "Quest a", level 7 - "Quest a0",
level 8 - "Quest b", level 9 - "Quest b0".
The import makes: "level 1 - "Titre chapitre", level 2 "Question 0", level 3 -
no style, level 4 "Question a", level 5 "Quest a", level 6 - "Quest a0" and so on.
This leads to the fact that already on page three an "semi-independent" list for
paragraph "Cas λ<0:...". It should be level 5 of the outline, but the style
"Question a0" has not been imported for the outline.

and re-apply "Heading 4" style to this para. Now Outline is
correct and it does not belong to the same list as eee anymore.

On the other hand, if I click Numbering back on, 'aaa' is now labelled 1
(instead of a) and 'ddd', 3 (instead of c)!
Same thing with BadOLd: click Numbering off 'bbb', then back on, makes both
'aaa' and 'bbb' labelled 1. Re-applying Heading4 does nothing.
Another (bad) thing: When file is read in, Tools/OutlineNumbering shows
numbering a, b, .. at level4 --that's what I assigned. After numbering has been
turned off and back on, it's 1, 2... at level4!
How does Writer 'choose' the numbering style 1, 2...? Should clicking Numbering
off/on for one para have such drastic effects on OutlineNumbering, which applies
to the whole document?

Another example: In BadOLh.odt, Hd3a and H3db are both Heading3 at level 3 in
OutlineNumbering. Yet, they have the same number '0'.
Enforcing Default formatting (in case it was altered) does not help.
Put cursor on either H3 and click Numbering off: BOTH get unnumbered at once!
Another quirk: I observed the defect in another document... but the problem had
disappeared after I saved the document and read it back. Obviously, I cannot
submit it, since the defect won't show when you open the file...

MRU's analysis of the import of the given Microsoft Word document in WW8 file
format is correct.
The WW8 import does not correctly recognize the numbering of the heading paragraphs.

All given four ODF text documents are imported and displayed correct regarding
the lists given in the ODF text document.

I think the incorrect WW8 import results in such unwanted text documents.

The effort for a fix of the WW8 import extends the current amount of resources
for OOo 3.2. Thus, I decided to re-target this issue to release OOo 3.3

setting keyword "numbering"

It is not clear due to limited resources if this issue can be solved for OOo
3.3. To be honest I am adjusting the target.

Getting document numbering right is pretty important.  If the numbering is wrong
often the import might as well be discarded.
