Followup to issue 92325: BiDi-Markup characters are very important for properly formatted Bi-Directional
text. There is currently no way to see or to change them once they are there. The only hint that they are
there is indirectly by the text being reordered differently from its default ordering. IMHO these characters
should be shown when "Show NonPrinting Characters" is enabled.

amen :-)
Comment 2 Oliver-Rainer Wittmann 2009-12-02 13:56:20 UTC
setting target and adjusting priority.

OD->MRU:
Any input from your side on this enhancement request?
Comment 3 hennerdrewes 2009-12-02 16:37:17 UTC
while examining writer sources, I discovered that there is already some code
present to show bidi control characters, but the code is commented out.

I have no idea, if this code is actually functional or not. I simply haven't had
the time to activate it, and see what happens...

If the code is actually working, I would really appreciate a P3 priority and
maybe even a 3.3 target.

If there is some problem with the code, could someone give a hint, why it was
deactivated in the first place?

MRU->OD: no, sorry, it would be better to ask SBA on BiDi stuff...
Comment 5 dawnlight 2009-12-03 14:35:45 UTC
This should be a simple icon that's understandable.

For example, a character like this ASCII art:

RTL       LTR
<==  and  ==>

This got me thinking of http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=107413

I attached a screenshot from MS Word (MS Office 2003). To me, it looks like
U+21B0 (Upward arrow with tip leftwards) for "LTR" and
U+21B1 (Upward arrow with tip rightwards) for "RTL" are used there.

sba-> dawnlight: Thanks for your proposal, but note that these markers will NOT
get "character space" but must be squeezed behind/between the normal text in
order to NOT change the layout, when displaying/hiding them. Thus a "slim"
solution as in Word is best.

We must assure that these display thingies will be available, so U+21B0 and
U+21B1 must be added to the OpenSymbol font that comes along with OOo. Therefore
I mentioned them in issue 107419 "Add characters to OpenSymbol font (spaces,
dashes, formatting characters)".

Reset assigne to the default "issues@openoffice.apache.org".
