Description beginner2 2009-03-20 09:17:43 UTC
I don't really know if I can call it a DEFECT. My problem is when I try to add a
point to a line (or a polygon)the line becomes an "angle" (the line is not
straight anymore). What I do is, I select the line press "shift" and then click
on the line. In most cases it works great but sometimes the line isn't straight
anymore. I can see it by clicking on undo and then redo. If you do that you can
see how the lineform changes.

I have some difficulties to reproduce that problem.

I tried as listed in the report, and 1 time I was successful to add an
additional point to a line (what seems to be without any influence to the line,
pls. see attached sample with screenshot). During all my further attempts with
other lines, the line became unselected when I clicked it with pressed shift key.

You can only add a new point, when you move the mouse a little bit. Application
help says, "Click the line where you want to add the point, and drag a short
distance." Therefore it is not astonishing, that the line gets an angle. This
works as designed, therefore it is not a defect. But I think it is a bad UI,
that you cannot set a point by simple clicking on the line. I set the issue to
enhancement and confirm it.

First I thought this might be related to the activated ggrid, but it is not
activated. The handling is quite bad I think. We can call this a defect. It
should be possible to add a point wherever the user wants it to. Reassigned.
Comment 5 Armin Le Grand 2009-03-23 11:00:35 UTC
AW: I see the point, but the click on an edge of a polygon is not different from
the click to select the polygon object. When we would remove the necessity to
drag a small distance, unwanted points would be added when selecting polygon
objects and the click to select is close to an edge. Tihis is even less wanted.
Thinking about other possibilities...
Comment 6 beginner2 2009-03-26 12:19:35 UTC
What about a button (add point to line) like the button "add point".
So you would select the polygon then click on that button and then you can
add points by clicking on the polygon (or nearby) when this button is turned off
you select a polygon by just click on it (it's just a suggestion).
Comment 7 beginner2 2009-03-30 14:33:55 UTC
Maybe it would be better if you just add a point by double click on the polygone.
But OO should check if the polygone is in a group and if the polygone is selcted.
If the polygone is in a group it should go in the group and then you can select
the polygone and add a point by double click on it.
Comment 8 Armin Le Grand 2009-06-22 14:37:59 UTC
AW->beginner2: To automatically enter a group will leave the not so experienced
OOo users behind; they will have no idea what happened and how to leave again.
Another button is also a bad idea; we try to reduce the button count. I think
the best idea is to remove the 'You have to move a little bit' restriction; You
can still use ESC to end adding the point or use UNDO after adding.

Changing to encancement and moving to OOo 3.2 (no guarantees; it may be shifted
when real bugs are here and workload is high)
Comment 9 Regina Henschel 2009-06-22 16:26:41 UTC
comment: There is no need for ESC to leave the point-adding mode and no need for
an additional button. In the 'Edit Points'-toolbar there are the two buttons
"Move Points" and "Insert Points". Exact one of them is active. These buttons
toggle between the two only possible modes and they are the regular way to enter
and leave the "Insert Points"-mode. So I think it is enough to remove the 'You
have to move a little bit' restriction.
Comment 10 Armin Le Grand 2009-06-23 10:34:16 UTC
AW->regina: ESC is not for leaving point edit mode, but already there for
breaking the add-point interaction (try adding point, drag around new point with
button still pressed, ESC -> break interaction, point not added). This is the
recommended method to not add a point when interaction was started. Since it's
there it makes the 'have to move a small amout' unnecessary which offers a 2nd
possibility to 'break' the running interaction.

Conclusion is the same:

>So I think it is enough to remove the 'You have to move a little bit' restriction.

But with the argument that no functionality (possibility to break the
interaction) is lost.

Sounds nice.(In case of need there is still the undo functin:))
