Description ddbr 2009-04-09 16:19:59 UTC
I don't know if this page is the right avenue for my query, but for the last
three years I have been using the Systran Office 5.0 program for translation
between English and Spanish in Microsoft word, using Systran's plug in for
Word. Now that I have changed from MS Word to Open Office, I don't know if
there is any way to continue using Systran. If there is any possibilty of
doing so, I would like to use it. Or, perhaps, there are alternatives that I
might try? I should be grateful for any light that can be thrown on this.

Thanks for your report; however, it is not really a bug but a compatibility
issue that depends on the Systrans company for resolution, since the number of
users involved is not significant. Systrans is a machine translation plugin for
Word. Perhaps they could be persuaded to release a proprietary version for OOo3?

Info here on machine translation mentioning Systrans
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_translation

Info listed here on open source projects, compatible with OOo,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer-assisted_translation

However, there is considerable interest currently by many governments,
especially US & EU, in reliable machine translations which are receiving
funding. Results are improved over time as the program builds up a store of
translation pairs (words, phrases).

This is not really an issue that OOo can resolve, but who knows? Maybe someone
is interested in building a plugin. There are some open source projects which
could use your knowledge and experience in bringing something about.

I will leave this as started for now, but await other opinions before marking it
as an invalid issue which it is and isn't. I don't know to whom it could be
assigned to carry it along as a plugin subproject.

Saludos,
Richard.
