Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 101776
Large number of comments makes Writer extremely slow
Last modified: 2019-09-12 19:56:18 UTC
Documents with many comments (less than 1000) cause overload of CPU and frequent crashes. No problem with Openoffice 2.x. From this point of view Openoffice 3.1 is worse than 3.0.1. Opening of documents with more than 1000 comments cause immediate crash.
Created attachment 62173 [details] document with 300 pages and 900 comments
Cannot reproduce in 310m11 on Vista. No crash. No high CPU usage.
cannot reproduce on Mac OS

OOo needs some time (~ 30 - 60 seconds) to place each comment but it does the job without crash on my machine : Ubuntu 8.04 wth 1 Go RAM.
On my “old” machine (windows xp sp3, 512MB RAM, 128MB VRAM) the start of the file and the placement of comments are slow (with high CPU usage), but there are also problems when the loading is completed: if I type only two letters in a document which has many comments, CPU usage goes up from 0% to 100% (for a few seconds, sometimes for a longer time), and the cursor gets stuck. In OOo 3.0.1 this happens when comments are visualized, in OOo 3.1 also when comments are not visualized.
MRU->OD: typing text in the attached document makes Writer extremely slow. I tried to enter some characters e.g. on page 4 and it took some seconds to process and display the new characters.
mod->facciadipietra: it would really help if you can attach a document which crashes, up to know, I can not reproduce any crash at all.
facciadipietra->mod: Sorry, I have problems in this moment. You can try and add 1000 comments. 2000 comments produced crash on my computer.
Created attachment 62540 [details] the attached document used to work with OOo 2.x, doesn't work with OOo 3.x (it causes crash of OOo when comments are visualised)
please provide step by step instruction how to get it to crash, I can't reproduce this.
On my computer the problem is perfectly evident. But this happens on my computer, which has these characteristics: Acer (2005), Intel Pentium 1.73GHz, 512 MB RAM, 128 MB VRAM (ATI Mobility Radeon X600), Windows XP Home Edition (2002 version), Service Pack 3. And no other problems. Steps: I open the file, immediately the loading seems very difficult, and OOo crashes in 30-60 seconds. When it doesn’t crash immediately, the crash happens in a few seconds after any simple action; example: if I try to open the “Find and Replace” window, or if I try to open another OOo file. And in every moment, at every action, the CPU is very “stressed”. That’s all. I repeat: this happens on my computer, which has those features. Perhaps the new comments-system of OOo3 needs a more powerful machine. Or perhaps I have to give up using comments in my usual way.
I can't reproduce, but if it crashes, you should get a crash report, please submit the id so someone can post the crash stack
I have observed the same high CPU usage in more powerful computers! Loading problems, and high CPU usage when I type text.
od->mod: I think this is Your playground - please take over.
I have tried with Mac OS (mac os x 10.4.10. Intel coreduo 2.4 GHz, 1 GB ram): same problems: slow loading, and when I type text the cursor gets stuck; it take some seconds to process and display the new characters (a little slower than Windows!)
it takes some seconds to process and display the new characters
Do you both have Language Tool installed or any other extension?
Oops, sorry, comments should go to another issues. :-[
I have tested different files on different machines and on different Windows versions, and also on Mac OS (mac os x 10.4.10. Intel coreduo 2.4 GHz, 1 GB ram): identical problems: slow loading, and when I type text the cursor gets stuck; Openoffice 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1.0 3.1.1 takes some seconds (with high CPU usage) to process and display the new characters (Mac os a little slower than Windows).
Openoffice3.2: same problems

I don't know if this can actually have to do, but after the installation of the last Java version (build 1.6.0_21-b07) openoffice.org (writer) has less frequent crashes with large files.
