Writer seems to open the attached .doc fine (although the layout is a bit off),
but as soon as you close the document OOo crashes. This is with OOo 3.1.0 on
both Linux and Windows.

I've encountered 3 different documents that cause the same behaviour so far.

On the Linux terminal OOo prints out the following message:
pure virtual method called
terminate called without an active exception

MRU->OD: just open the attached doc and close it -> crash.
It looks, that the two drawing groups in it may cause the crash.

Any news on this? I keep finding more documents that crash this way.

I strongly suspect that this is a duplicate of issue 101239. If that's the case
then it will have been fixed in DEV300m54 already.

cant reproduce on OOO320m18 (released version 3.2.1) on linux. assuming
duplicate of issue 101239 as proposed by cmc.

Yes, confirm this. Works fine in OOO320m1 and DEV300m84.
