Description houseelf 2009-05-15 05:47:19 UTC
I have noticed that the Windows and Linux (Ubuntu v9.04) releases of OOo v3.0
and 3.1 handle cell protection differently. In The Linux release the "Protect
Sheet" dialog box has options to select/deselect locked cells and
select/deselect unlocked cells. In the Windows release these options seem to be
missing. I need to open the same spreadsheets on different machines, one running
Linux and the other running Windows Vista, so it is a problem if the software
behaves differently on each machine.
Is this problem easily fixed or do we have to wait for the next release of Open
Office?

Just use the versions from download.openoffice.org for all platforms.

I'm afraid I do not consider the issue to be invalid, as releases of the same
software revision for two platforms behave differently, indicating that they are
not fully synchronized. In addition, the suggestion to "Just use the versions
from download.openoffice.org for all platforms." is a cop-out, keeping in mind
the fact that the v3.0 and 3.1 releases for Windows, doesn't have the
aforementioned options, and came from download.openoffice.org and the v3.0
release for Linux, which comes bundled with the latest Ubuntu v9.04 distros, has
the required functionality. I would finish by saying that I've been sampling OOo
since v2.0 as a replacement for MS Office and this type of problem is what turns
me back to the very much over-bloated MS product every time.

Thanks for your time,
Graeme.

If you don't like the changes Ubuntu adds to their versions, complain to them.
Or don't use their version. What are we supposed to do? Our builds don't have
these differences between platforms.

I'm sorry if you have misunderstood my point. I was NOT complaining about the
Ubuntu software release, which you may or may not have control over, but asking
why I, being a windows user, don't get the same features in your software as
I've seen in a Linux release which I am led to believe came bundled with Ubuntu
v9.04.
My situation is that my users have some difficulty with tabbing across protected
cells which are skipped over in Excel, being not selectable, but selected in
Calc, causing problems with data entry. My intention was not to offend anyone,
merely to have a fairly simple question answered, and that is "Are there any
plans to implement this feature in future releases for Windows?" and if not, "is
there a suitable workaround?"
Thanks again.
