Description glutnix 2009-05-22 01:00:49 UTC
Process for replication:
0. Check that
     Tools > Customize... > Keyboard > Shift+Home
is set to 'select to begin of line'. Shift+Home is a white arrow pointing up
followed by a NW pointing arrow.
1. Type five lines of text in Writer
2. Put cursor in middle of the third line
3. Press Home or End to confirm that cursor moves to start or end of line.
4. Press Shift-Home or Shift-End

Desired outcome:
Text is selected from start of line to original cursor position OR original
cursor position to end of line

What actually happens:
Text is selected from start of DOCUMENT to original cursor position OR original
cursor position to end of DOCUMENT.

Tested with Mac OS X 10.5.6 with OOo 3.0.0 (works as expected) and 3.1.0 (DEFECT).

<vent>Fundamental stuff like this needs to be tested before release! I'm a
time-strapped PHP/Flash tutor trying to get paperwork done in an environment
where my employer refuses to buy MS Office, not a software engineer who has time
to volunteer on a QA team. It's trivial crap like this that gives OSS a bad

Likewise Shift+end selects to end of document instead of selecting tho the end of the line.

This bug is still present in OO320m12 (build 9483) on OS X 10.6.2 Intel and a regular Apple
keyboard (model A1234).

It's not just shift+end or shift+home, but also plain home and plain end. Instead of going to the end of
the line the end key goes to the end of the document and the home key goes to the start of the
document instead of going to the beginning of the line .

As it is the "End" key and "Home" keys actions don't match what is in the preferences:

   Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard -> ...

In the preferences, the End key is set to go to the end of the line and the Home
key is set to go to the start of the line.

Changing the preference settings either for Writer or for OpenOffice.org as a whole does not change
the malfunction.

Retested this Defect using MacBook with Open Office Version 4.0.0
1.	Check Keyboard preferences for Home and End Key functionality
Click on Tools > Customize > Keyboard
Document the MacBook emulates a Home and End key
End Key – Command key and left arrow
Home Key – Command key and right arrow
2.	Type five lines of text in Writer beginning at the left hand margin and completing to end of page with no spaces
3.	Place cursor somewhere in the middle of third line of text
4.	Press the Command Key and then the left arrow for the cursor to move to the start of the third line of text
5.	Place the cursor in the middle of the third line of text
6.	Press the Command Key and then the right arrow for the cursor to move to the end of the third line of the text

Expected Results:

When the cursor is placed in the middle of the third line of text and the user presses the Command Key and the left arrow, the cursor moves to the beginning of that typed line of text. When the cursor is placed in the middle of the third line of text and the user presses the Command Key and the right arrow, the cursor moves to the end of that typed line of text.

Actual Results:
When the cursor is placed in the middle of the third line of text and the user presses the Command Key and the left arrow, the cursor moved to the beginning of that typed line of text. When the cursor is placed in the middle of the third line of text and the user presses the Command Key and the right arrow, the cursor moved to the end of that typed line of text.

Bug still exists, same behavior on 4.1.2 and OS X 10.10.5.

So it's been 7 YEARS and no one has even looked at this?

I tested this on Windows 10 using AOO412m3(Build:9782) 4.1.2 and on OSX V 10.11.3 Intel.

I was UNABLE to replicate this bug on Windows 10 with the following steps:
1. Confirm Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard -> Shift+Home and Shift+End were set to "Select to Begin of Line" and "Select to End of Line" respectively.
2. Type 5 lines of text into document.
3. Put cursor into middle of 3rd row.
4. Confirm "Home" and "End" buttons move cursor to beginning/end of current line.
5. Press Shift-Home or Shift-End.

Expected Result:
Text is selected from beginning of current line to cursor position for Shift-Home and text is select from end of line to current cursor position.

Actual Result (same as expected result):
Text is selected from beginning of current line to cursor position for Shift-Home and text is select from end of line to current cursor position.

I was also UNABLE to replicate this bug on OSX V 10.11.3 using the following steps:
(Macbook emulates "Home" and "End" keys using "Command+Left Arrow" and "Command+Right Arrow"
1. 1. Confirm Tools -> Customize -> Keyboard -> Shift-Command-Left and Shift-Command-Right are set to "Select to Begin of Line" and "Select to End of Line" respectively.
2. Type 5 lines of text into document.
3. Put cursor into middle of 3rd row.
4. Confirm Command-Left and Command-Right buttons move cursor to beginning/end of current line.
5. Press Shift-Command-Left or Shift-Command-Right.

Expected Result:
Text is selected from beginning of current line to cursor position for Shift-Home and text is select from end of line to current cursor position.

Actual Result (same as expected result):
Text is selected from beginning of current line to cursor position for Shift-Home and text is select from end of line to current cursor position.

German Keyboard

I was unable to reproduce the issue on my configuration in accordance with the original bug description and recreation steps.
I also attempted to recreate it with 5 paragraphs of 'Lorem Ipsum' generated text. I tried on the 3rd line of this text and additionally many other lines using both the Shift-Home and Shift-End keys which functioned in the way I expected.

To be clear: the bugs manifest 100% of the time when using a keyboard that has an actual Home and End key. It appears that the people unable to reproduce were using the small-keyboard/laptop-keyboard hardware shortcuts to simulate Home/End.

Macs DO have full-size keyboards, standard USB keyboards, with dedicated home/end keys. These keys work correctly in all apps except OpenOffice. Either find a desktop mac with large size keyboard (not a mini one) or take any mainstream USB keyboard and plug it in to test.

(I have tested on a few different USB keyboards and seen the same problem on all of them, from different vendors. I haven't tried any BlueTooth keyboards, but I believe the problem is OOo is incorrectly reading/responding to some KeyCodes from the OS/HAL, so that it's not an issue about KBs or drivers - it's OOo/OS integration).
