Description kcleung 2009-07-18 07:20:52 UTC
I am a regular user in my university without admin privilege (the computers are aluminium 24" iMac
with OS X 10.5.7), therefore after unzipping the openoffice .dmg image, I drag the application to:

/Users/<user>/Applications/

within my home directory, rather than the usual system-space /Applications/

However when I attempt to start openoffice.org, it just exits silently. This behaviour certainly has a bad
effect on openoffice uptake among Mac users.

Being able to run from a user-space installation without admin privilege is very important for many
users.

@ macport: Can someone have a look please?

I have test it. FIrst I test on my normal User-Account. Here I have no problem.
Then I with my OOo Testuser without system privilege:

- after the welcome-wizard with first start OOo freeze - I must kill it by
context-menu of the app-icon -> [de]Sofort beenden[/de]

- with the second start OOo commes without welcom-wizard but with
register-wizard (and with the question about the Improvement program), after
this, OOo works normal and after a further start OOo works normal.

- after that test I delete my config-dir (~/Library/Application
Support/OpenOffice.org) and start OOo new - OOo works normal too

- after that I delete the configdir and OOo and install OOo again - works
normal... I could't reproduce the freeze or kcleung's problem - perhaps i hasn't
enough patience with the first start?

My System: MacBook Pro 15", 2.4 GHz Intel CPU, 4GB RAM, MAC OS X 10.5.7

@kcleung: you write about your iMac (with PPC-CPU?)... Is that a bug only in
PPC-Version?

My computers are aluminium macbook 13" and aluminium iMac 24", both are Intel C2D based.

I don't have admin privileges in any of the machines. I drag the OpenOffice.org to

~/Applications/

and when I try to double-click OpenOffice.org under ~/Applications, the OO icon on the bar bounces for
10 seconds, then it disappears and the program ends silently.

I just checked with RC2 on OSX PPC (Tiger (10.4))
Installed it to a users Applications $HOME/Applications who has no admin
priviledges ... I could do several documents including creating an ODF database.

not reproducible → worksforme.

You can only have one instance of OOo for the same user profile running at the
same time. So make sure you don't have another instance of OOo running under your
user. Alternatively use the -env:UserInstallation=file:///Users/foobar/nondefault
startup parameter to explicitly specify a different user-installation directory

Different versions of OOo, that don't use the same user profile directory can be
used simultaneously without problem.

closing.

Feel free to reopen if you can still reproduce with a current version of OOo
(3.2.1 was just released).
But please check that no other instances of OOo are running.
