Description troodon 2009-08-14 19:58:46 UTC
The lower part of the gamma symbol from OpenSymbol v 1.21 is missing at small
zoom levels, no matter if subpixel rendering is on or off. See the attached
testcase and screenshot.

This happens in all OOo applications and also with older versions of the font
(at least in 1.10 and 1.11).

This is a follow-up of issue 99047 (where you can get OpenSymbol v 1.21).

Comment 3 jbf.faure 2009-08-15 21:03:42 UTC
I do not reproduce the problem with OOo 3.1.1 RC1 (FR) under Ubuntu 8.04.
Comment 4 Olaf Felka 2009-08-17 07:34:21 UTC
@ sba: Please have a look.
Comment 5 nospam 2009-08-17 08:09:27 UTC
ih>tl: please have a look at this - I think this can not be fixed in the font itself. Please install the new
Version of the font (see issue 99047) for testing
Comment 6 thomas.lange 2009-08-17 08:26:10 UTC
TL->MRU: Isee no problem with the StarSymbol font. Can you please check on a
local machine by removing the StarSymbol font (which I am hesitating to do on a
shared machine)? If then anything is found we should ask HDU.
At least this one looks different from the usual problem that the OpenSymbol
font is not hinted.

Gamma at E029 in OpenSymbol 1.21 exceeds typographic descent
Comment 8 2009-08-17 09:08:19 UTC
WriterEngine/EditEngine use the typographic ascent/descent for clipping. Since the gamma glyph at
U+E0B9 extends below the descent they clip it away...
Comment 9 thomas.lange 2009-08-17 11:43:36 UTC
Tested with HDU: Looking at the glyph with other typical apps (MSW/WP/Notepad)
the problem with the font is the same everywhere. Both at large sizes and at
small sizes; at small sizes there might be the additonal problem that
insufficient hinting makes some important pixels disappear.

TL->IH: Please take over. Thanks!
Comment 10 nospam 2009-08-17 12:11:17 UTC
->hdu: thanks for your hint with the ascend/descend - I will try to change the outline and hinting of the
character so it fits to the proper area

@all: please test the new version of the font
Comment 13 troodon 2009-11-10 00:25:48 UTC
-> ih

The gamma glyph looks great at all zoom levels, so to me this issue seems to
have been fixed. Thank you!

Comment 14 2009-11-17 14:02:29 UTC
@ih: Font validation complains about many problems (like self-intersection, outlines in the wrong
direction and missing points at extremas). Please use FontForge's Element->Validation to find them.

Verified in CWS tl76.
Comment 18 michael.ruess 2010-05-05 13:47:21 UTC
Checked in DEV300m77.
Comment 19 troodon 2010-08-09 15:34:49 UTC
I'm reopening this issue because I'm seeing again with OpenSymbol 2.3.9 and
DEV300_m86 with the following zoom-leves: 140%, 170%, 200%, 230%, 260%.
Comment 20 michael.ruess 2010-08-17 09:49:56 UTC
MRU->HDU/IH/TL: I can confirm the described problem. It reappears with
OpenSymbol 2.3.9 in zoom levels of 170% or 200%. Happens in 300m86 and OOO330m4.
Looks fine with OpenSymbol 2.3.9 used in OOo 3.2.1. So it does not look like a
problem in the font - more like a regression in the core.
Comment 21 2010-08-17 10:21:50 UTC
I suggest to open a new issue for the latest problem to avoid confusion between
- the glyph exceeds the font boundaries even in design space
- the glyph exceeds the clip bounds for some hintinig/antialiasing/embedding setting for some zoom
levels on some devices
The former was solved with this issue, the latter was introduced with issue 64508, which expanded the
configuration possibilities for hinting modes. The only way to solve that is to modify the gamma yet again
until all tests for different hinting modes, zoom levels etc. look satisfactory.

set target to 3.x since not release relevant for 3.4 release.
Comment 24 Marcus 2017-05-20 10:55:13 UTC
Reset assigne to the default "".
