When you select the black and white print option in impress it prints all text
as black, but it also prints dark background images in black, so the text is
invisible on any slide that has a dark background image.

FWIW I think Microsoft Office simply doesn't print background images when you
select black and white - this is consistent with the fact that you generally
select black and white because you just want to print black text on white
instead of covering the page in ink.
If we think that people might want background images printed, then perhaps there
could be an option for this... but if dark images are printed in black then any
text on top should be white.
