Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 105750
Help: regex for 2 terms in 2 paragraphs
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:28:56 UTC
In OOo 3.0.0 OOO300m9 (Build 9358), with Fedora 10 Linux, in Writer > Help menu > OpenOffice.org Help > Index tab > regular expressions > searching > Display button > note: It says, "You can only search for regular expressions within the same paragraph. That is, you cannot search for one term in a paragraph and a different term in the next paragraph." This is unclear. If you mean searching is limited to 1 paragraph, just say "You can only search for regular expressions within the one paragraph that has the insertion point or the highlight." and drop the 2d sentence. If you mean that 2 regexes can't be run in different paragraphs at once, drop the 1st sentence and just say "You cannot search for one term in one paragraph and a different term in another paragraph." Thank you. -- Nick
@ufi: please have a look.
We don't mean either one of your suggestions. A search with or without regex is not bound to the insertion point or text cursor position (except that the search starts there). The limitation to the one paragraph only span of search expressions cannot be bypassed by highlighting or selecting multiple paragraphs. There is no way to run 2 regexes at the same time. What we possibly mean is that any regex search will stop at paragraph borders. Should we better use an example? If you search for "border.*better" in the two paragraphs above this one, the search will not succeed because of the paragraph end inside the matching result. Remove the paragraph end, and the search succeeds. How to find the right words?
I checked with "Ooo Dev 3.2.0 multilingual version English UI WIN XP: [DEV300m60 (Build 9425)]" and found the reported Text, and I don't understand it, too. And no idea for a better description.
I propose the following as the full note (at the pushpin icon), provided this fits OOo's specifications and performance for regex searches: A search using a regular expression will work only within one paragraph. To search using a regular expression in more than one paragraph, do a separate search in each paragraph. Titles, subparagraphs, and other units of text may be considered as separate paragraphs, each requiring a separate search when a regular expression is being used. I don't think you need an example to illustrate that a regex works only in one paragraph. If that note is too long, the first sentence should be sufficient. However, if room is available, I recommend keeping all three sentences, because the help file is intended for users who don't know much about regexes and need clarity.
