Description hstangor 2009-10-11 19:27:16 UTC
During a big conversion task we found a lot of StarWriter 3.1 documents that let
OpenOffice loop forever when you try to open them (CPU at 100%, no crash). These
documents can only be opened with StarWriter 3.1 .

The problem is on all OpenOffice Platforms and Versions.

Details will be attached as PDF. We will also attach Demo Documents showing the
behaviour.

Reproducible with "Ooo 3.1.1 WIN XP DE-multilingual version German UI activated
[OOO310m19 (Build 9420)]"! OOo hangs when I open "crashes.sdw" from WIN Explorer
or OOo dialog (other possibilities not tested)

Same problem with "2.4.1 Multilingual version English UI WIN XP:
[680m17(Build9310)]".

Still reproducible with "Ooo Dev 3.2.0 multilingual version English UI WIN XP:
[DEV300m60 (Build 9425)]"!

No problem when I tried to open document from WIN Explorer with "1.1.4 (German)
WIN XP: [645m52 (Build 8824)]"

The problem remained after saved "crashes.sdw" from OOo 1.1.4 as "crashes1.sdw".
Size raised from 10kB to 13kB, but "crashes1.sdw" still can not be opened with
3.1.1.. So I doubt that this one is related to Issue 74848.

@hstangor:
What Platforms ans OS did you test?

MRU->OD: looks like the table in the footer makes the import loop.
Comment 7 hstangor 2009-10-12 19:32:39 UTC
Hello Rainer,

i tested on OSX Leopard and Snow Leopard using Open Office 2.x branch, latest
Open Office 3.x branch. Also on current version of NeoOffice (based on
OpenOffice Converter Code).

Also tested on Windows XP Home and Professional, OOO 2.x branches and newest OOO
3.x versions.

It was reproducible using english and german versions of Windows.

I also tested Online-Converters that are based on UNO. All of them never came
back with a result (guess they looped, too).

We also ran OOO in Service Mode / UNO and the same loop occurs.

Only very old Star Writer Versions can deal with the documents. StarWriter 3.1
can for example.

I suppose it's an error in the converter that's in there for quite some time.
Maybe it is the combination of "Footer Area" / "Table" / "Multiple Paragraph
Breaks". Might be uncommon, thus undetected by the public.

Hello hstangor,

I've attempted to reproduce this bug on Windows XP SP3 and Linux and succeeded
on both attempts. I've also run some follow up tests to probe the depth of this
defect. You can see the scenarios and results in the PDF I've included. For one
of the scenarios it will also be necessary to download the attached sample file.
