It crashed as I went to save what I had on the document so far. I was able to recover, but lost a lot of information from my midterm. (11.00 KB, text/plain)

Description charlieeppes 2009-10-19 21:00:47 UTC
I just upgraded my Open Office to 3.1.1 and now, all of a sudden, while I am
doing my midterms for university, the program shut down on me. I don't think
this is supposed to happen. Can you please take a look at this? This happened
on my other computer as well and that was running Windows XP, while my laptop is
running Windows Vista.
Comment 1 eric.savary 2009-10-19 21:29:34 UTC
Please read:
http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/basic_rules.html
and:
http://www.openoffice.org/scdocs/ddIssues_EnterModify.html#priority

Now we need an exact description.
Reading your comments, I assume you are working on a specific document.
Attach it here and describe when the crash happens.

Cannot reproduce on Vista with 3.1.1.

Re-write again your document and save more often.
If this happens again you will then know which content causes the crash.
For now, the crash is not reproducible.
Feel free to reopen when you can reproduce it.

Well, I went to save the SAME document and while it was saving, it CLOSED again!
Then, the report an error box came up, so I reported it. Please reopen and keep
open until this can be resolved. I need this for school and am getting close to
uninstalling it from my system and paying $150 to convert my trial of Microsoft
Office over to full.
Comment 6 eric.savary 2009-10-21 18:21:53 UTC
The document you've attached doesn't crash when just opening it, typing 1 letter
and saving.

Are you doing something else?
Comment 7 charlieeppes 2009-10-21 18:55:16 UTC
I was not typing a LETTER. I was typing a PAPER...part of my midterm exam. It
was NOT a letter and the only thing that I was doing besides typing was SAVING it
every five minutes, so I wouldn't lose it. I was doing NOTHING else. It does NOT
happen on command, but it DOES happen. It does it when it wants to.
Comment 8 eric.savary 2009-10-21 19:07:57 UTC
With "letter" I meant 1 "character"...

Anyway, if you want us to fix this, you need to describe exactly what to add to
the attached document in order to make it crash.

Every "random" crash cannot be fixed.

So now what you can do is:
- try to reproduce to 100% the crash: when it crashes try to remember what you
had typed since the last time it had been saved. Then retype and save more often
to locate which content makes the document crash.
- send a crash report if the recovery tool shows up.

For now this issue still deserves a WORKSFORME.
Comment 9 charlieeppes 2009-10-21 19:18:10 UTC
How much more often can I save? I'm saving it every FIVE minutes! I cannot
reproduce it. It just happens when it does. This LACK of actually looking into
it, is very disconcerning to me. I am not happy with the response that I am
getting here or Openoffice and I will be switching back over to Microsoft Word.
Looks like I'll be shelling out the money for that, instead of using this
"program". Thanks, but no thanks.
Comment 10 eric.savary 2009-10-21 20:26:40 UTC
"I cannot reproduce it."
It's one of the basics: if you cannot find what triggers the crash we cannot
either. Thus cannot fix it. We cannot do black magic fixing problem we don't see.

"This LACK of actually looking into it, is very disconcerning to me"
There is no "lack" here and "looking into it" means:
- For you: find what particular circumstance leads to a crash
- For us: give you ideas of what you can test to surround the problem.
I have done my part.

Last try: if you want to help us fixing this, try to watch out what you write,
what you format and after the crash, do this again.

We don't know what you add to your document, where you save it how you computer
looks like. You are the only one who can help us to fix this problem.
Comment 11 eric.savary 2009-10-23 11:17:49 UTC
Feel free to reopen when you have the information needed.

You want an error report? Here's your ERROR REPORT, considering it also JUST
HAPPENED while I was creating a PRESENTATION and SAVING IT!!

Ok I think you are not whiling to help us finding out what the problem is...

A crash is not equal another crash. The crash report you posted concerns Impress
so the probability it is the same problem as what you first reported tends to 0.

I'd really advice you to read the URLs in my comments and look at other issues
to understand what is meant with "reproducible".

For now this issue is still invalid.

MRU->charlieepps: did you send the crash report? Then you should get an
automatic answer mail where a crash report ID is posted. Please add the crash id.
Also, from the crash info you already posted it looks that the problem might be
somewhere in the area of graphical stuff. Does updating the graphic driver of
your laptop help?
