The option "selection" is for parts on a slide that you want to export to pdf.
You have got to select the objects you want to export to pdf and then check
"selection in the pdf dialog.
As you have not selected anything in your export the resulting file is empty.
If you want to export single pages of a document please use the option "pages".

Ok, I see how it's supposed to work, but then again the option _is_not_ greyed out when exporting from 
slide sorter view, but it _is_ greyed out when exporting from normal view with nothing selected.

Should it not be greyed out in slide sorter view, too, since you can't select any objects, but only slides in 
this mode?
