Description whizree 2009-12-06 15:09:54 UTC
There is a very common need to suppress Blank Address Fields when creating form
letters, envelopes and labels from Databases.

At present it is possible to suppress blank fields but means of Hidden Paragraph
functions. However, the set up of this is very demanding and many people,
particularly those not experienced in programming, find it too difficult to do.

There have been many comments about this in OOo forums, but no action appears to
have been taken.

Please can this be given a high priority on future enhancements?

Please define more precisely what should be shown/printed when where.

The implementation problems:
- you are addressing a feature which should be added to very different Writer
components (Mail merge, Letter/Fax... Wizards, Labels... = different developpers
= separated issues)
- one solution would be to automatically insert a conditional field/hidden
paragraph in front of every inserted field. What should happen if a complete
database record is empty? i.e. a database record has no name, address etc.:
should a label display empty or not display at all?
- your summary is "... when printing": as we claim to be WYSIWYG, shouldn't it
also suppress the empty fields/blocks on screen (in the document)? What should
be the default (show/hide)?

Because it is not clear what is needed where and when, I invite you to detail
the cases this applies to (thus reassigning back to you).

At best, look for help and feedback on the discuss@ux.openoffice.org mailing
list in order to surround and define the problem more precisely.

Additional explanation added.

Reassigning to Requirements.

But as I said: posting your findings on discuss@ux.openoffice.org will help your
proposal in:
- getting attention
- feedback

thanks for the proposal, whizree.
I've found some related issues:
  issue 47786 issue 19767

In your additional explanation you mention for the labels and envelops:
the line ends in the wizard, that may be a problem. That is correct if you use
the conditional fields in any case.

About mail merge letters:
I would regret not to handle the blanc lines in now.
A different solution as the one you suggested for the labels is needed. I would
think of "insert conditional field linked to ...".
