Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 107711
Disable Export/Save to Word 95/Word 6.0 By Default
Last modified: 2013-09-03 19:39:17 UTC
I would like to see the "Save As" option to Word 95 and Word 6.0 Formats disabled by default. Pros to disabling: * The export to 95/6.0 is much worse than saving to other formats, 97/2000/XP for instance (yet the warning is the same) * I have had several users accidentally click on 95/6.0 when they meant 97/2000/XP. (the result was a complete loss for them) * Very few people still collaborate with MS Office 95/6.0. * It cleans up the Save As menu. Cons: Harder for people who do collaborate with 15 year old file formats. -> Make it an option that they have to turn on. Overall, this should help the majority of OpenOffice.org users who have to occasionally choose a format that is not odt. Similar to issue 107220 but that asked for a different solution (autobackup in odt).
Reassigned to requirements.
Microsoft Office 95 compatibility is very important for those in academia especially the ability to read files created in Microsoft Office 95. Ref: http://help.wugnet.com/office/open-powerpoint-95-powerpoint-2007-ftopict961136.html quote Thank You, Micheal, for Your offer. We have about 40.000 files in older Office-formats whereof, about 25.000 in Office 95, about 15.000 in Powerpoint-Presentations and WORD-Handbooks. /quote Many professors wrote in that thread about their problem of opening Office 95 files in the newer MS Office suites. Keeping Microsoft Office 95 compatiblity functional and *visible* will help Apache OOo expand into academic circles which is important as these are the people teaching the next generation. Their influence on students is very high and Microsoft knows this, this is why Microsoft offers a very steep discounted rate for their Office suite for both teachers and students. Consider academia a battleground, Microsoft certainly does.
Agree.
Except this bug is about removing *save* support for Word 6.0/95, not open support. AFAIK if it is so incomplete that tables are lost, it should be either be fixed or removed.
