Description michael_maurer 2009-12-27 18:35:58 UTC
The latest version of writer saves files in the word-format (97-2003) correctly.
However, if these files are opened, edited and saved in the word-format again,
the German umlauts will be replaced by other characters (e.g. トöü トヨワ).

This problem occurs only with the Linux version 3.1.1, the previous versions and
Windows versions are not affected.

Writer - German umlaut
Comment 2 Rainer Bielefeld 2009-12-28 11:44:05 UTC
Reproducible with "Unbenannt 1.doc" "Ooo 3.2.0 RC1 WIN XP DE-multilingual
version German UI activated [OOo320m8 (Build 9472)]"!

Steps to reproduce:
0. open new "Unbenannt 1.doc"
1. Save as .odt
2. Save as WORD95 .doc and close
3. open with MS WORD VIEWER
everything looks fine (so save-export seems ok)
4. close
6. Open with OOo
   Expected: äöü ...
   Actual: トヨワ ...

For me that's only reproducible with sample document and WORD95 format, not with
own new WRITER document and / or WIRD97 format.

@michael_maurer:
It seems you attached a WORD95 document (Word 6.0)? Why did you report "97-2003"?

Comment 3 michael_maurer 2009-12-29 20:02:03 UTC
The format used is the Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP format. I have not tested the
Word95 or Word 6-format.

I have been using Writer since 2002 under MS Windows and changed to Linux
(OpenSuse) in late 2007. The effect occurred first when I opened an existing
document, which was created with OOo 2.4.1 and in which all umlauts were
destroyed when I saved the file.

Unfortunately, this effect occurs with new files as well.

@michael_maurer:
No! Pls. open sample document "Unbenannt 1.doc" with a text editor, you will see
"Microsoft Word 6.0-Dokument" in it, what means "WORD98". And my OOo suggests to
save it (again) as WOR95. That seems to mean that there is something wrong with
your UI (document type does not match with type in UI)?
What ever that might have to do with the reported problem

Have you opened the uploaded pdf? It shows how I save the files and the selected
format, as well as the result when I open the same file with Writer under Linux
again.

However, I have just opened the file with my Notebook (using OOo 3.1.1-Build
9420) under Vista and can confim the following:

1. When I open the uploaded file, the file type is the Word 97-2003 format.
2. When I save the file (again) the proposede format is the Word95 format.

One final remark:

You are perfectly right. All files saved with Writer (3.1.1) under Opensuse 11.2
will be saved in the Word95 format, although the selection is Word 97/2000/XP
(please see Test Dokument.pdf). All files saved with previous versions were
saved in the correct format (Word Document 8 9) when the Word 97/2000/XP format
was selected.

The German characters will not be destroyed in the odt-format, but it is
impossible to save files with umlauts in the Word 97/2000/XP format. I hope this
helps.

@ rainerbielefeld

If you confirm a problem please set the issue to NEW

@ michael_maurer

where do you get the version of OpenOffice.org from?
From the OpenSuse Repository?
Comment 10 Rainer Bielefeld 2010-01-02 09:39:09 UTC
@mechtilde:
Pls. read the useful hints in "An issue's life cycle"!
It seems that currently we don't even know whether this issue is under OOo's
responsibility, so I doubt that your decision to changed status was wise.

You didn't mention how YOU reproduced the issue? Can you confirm the poblem with
your Linux version and a newly created document? Or only with the sample
document, that might be damaged?

I will reset this issue to UNCONFIRMED on 12.01.10 if we won't get a
confirmation that the problem exists for native OOo and with any new document.
Comment 11 michael_maurer 2010-01-02 10:11:30 UTC
Dear all,

the version I use comes with the OpenSuse 11.2 distribution and is updated via
/repositories/OpenOffice.org:/STABLE/openSUSE_11.2/. I believe that this is not
a major issue since the best solution is always to choose the odt-format.
However, the Linux version I use does not support the possibility of saving
files in the Word 97/2000/XP format since all files saved in this format
effectively will be in the Word95-format instead and all umlauts will be destroyed.
Comment 12 Mechtilde 2010-01-02 10:44:35 UTC
So I guess it seems to be a problem of the version supplied with the distribution

the reporter himself tells "However, the Linux version I use does not support
the possibility of saving files in the Word 97/2000/XP format since all files
saved in this format effectively will be in the Word95-format instead"

And this is only a behaviour of the/his Suse version

@pmladek Can you confirm?

I think that this is more a duplicate (at least same root cause) of issue 69970.

Closing duplicate.
Comment 15 pmladek 2010-01-04 12:59:10 UTC
If the user uses KDE4, it might be a duplicate of the bugs
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=557585 and
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=551730

It is fixed in the OOo-3.1.1.5 packages that are available in the
OpenOffice.org:STABLE repository, see
http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_package_repositories#OpenOffice.org_STABLE
