Description ven_upatissa 2010-03-04 02:30:44 UTC
I tried two times to download English US v3.2 (w/o JRE) by clicking the
appropriate selection on the downloads page. Both times I was automatically sent
to some mirror site in Taiwan. Both times (3AM and 5AM Taiwan time, the download
failed after 60 or 100 MB with a timeout error. This is especially irritating
since I have to pay for bandwidth usage. The first download started well (60 -
100 KBps using a DL accelerator, but the speed dropped to 16K after a few
minutes, and 5K after that. And the second download was equally fast: 3.7 to 9 KBps.

I let the second one run all night. I awoke to the error "Unable to save...can
not read source file."

Please allow users some choice of mirror sites.

What mirror did you use? Pls. see overview on
<http://distribution.openoffice.org/mirrors/#mirrors>?

<ftp://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/OpenOffice/stable/3.2.0/> really looks incomplete, and
OOo-SDK_3.2.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe definitively is broken (7836KB)

<http://ftp.twaren.net/OpenOffice/stable/3.2.0/> also looks incomplete

<http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/OpenOffice/stable/3.2.0/> also looks incomplete
no "OOo_3.2.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe" available

<ftp://ftp.cse.yzu.edu.tw/pub/openoffice/>: no 3.2.0 available

<http://ftp.cse.yzu.edu.tw/pub/openoffice/stable/>: no 3.2.0 available

<ftp://ftp.chu.edu.tw/Mirrors/OpenOffice/stable/3.2.0/> really looks incomplete, and
OOo-SDK_3.2.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe definitively is broken (7836KB)

It looks that every mirror has another number of files for download. Here urgent
action seems to be required.

I sent emails to maintainers.

All downloads I started worked fine, but of course, I did not try the incomplete
files.

A server is used for a file only if the is available there.
It would be good to know from where the downloads where started to understand
whether the is a problem with the selection of the mirror. The IP address of
your PC or the name of the provider would be helpful.
Comment 4 Rainer Bielefeld 2010-03-09 05:25:09 UTC
My comments from rainerbielefeld Thu Mar 4 07:07:23 +0000 2010 contains a
mistake: OOo-SDK_3.2.0_Win32Intel_install_en-US.exe definitively is NOT broken.

@st:
How does that "file on mirror available check" work? It' not sufficient that the
file is available, it also must be checked that it's not defect and that the
server is not overloaded. I just teste download of
"OOo_3.1.1_LinuxIntel_install_en-US.tar.gz" from
<http://ftp.cse.yzu.edu.tw/pub/openoffice/stable/3.1.1/>. It took more than 2
minutes until download started, then speed was only 116kB/s (TU-BS: 600kB/s, my
maximum bandwidth)
Comment 5 Marcus 2010-03-09 13:18:48 UTC
IMHO this cannot be done. Otherwise a server would be permanent busy with
downloading and checking thousands of files. So, this cannot be the solution. In
the very most cases the files are consistent.

BTW:
Mirrorbrain is not able to do this as there is no function for this. It's "only"
an URL redirection service.

WONTFIX is not satisfying, but I don't have any better idea. And currently it
seems that we do not have big trouble with misled download attempts.

So Issue 109864 might also be be a DUP of this one (or WONFIX, too)?

The good thing is, we still have 5 .tw mirrors. So MB can still redirect to some.

I'll close the other issue.
