Description robdibley 2010-03-31 15:20:31 UTC
Fill a cell with string that contains a typical superscripted component, such as
a date e.g. :
Friday 26th March

The "th" gets automatically superscripted.

Now select the cell and change the text color to a different color.

You will see that only the part before the superscripted text is colored.

Workaround : you can get around this by coloring within the text, i.e. by
editing the text entry and coloring it, rather than coloring the whole cell.
However this results in further problems as the coloring is then not able to be
changed for the whole cell, even when the in-text coloring is removed.

Additional note :

after playing with this some more it becomes apparent that it is as a result of
saving to and then loading from xls format.

when first editing the file it works fine, however after a save and load, the
color settings seem to be split around the superscript, so that changing the
cell setting only effects the first part, and not the rest.

I cannot confirm it. Here the whole text is colored. Did you really select the
cell? The cell should be shown with blue background then.

Please give a very precise step-by-step description. (Where you click,
double-click or single-click, how you move your mouse...)

Does it work, if you use Format > Cells > Font Effects?

Full step-by-step description :

Create New Spreadsheet
Enter "Friday 26th March" in any cell
Save as XLS format
Close sheet
Open saved sheet
Select cell by clicking once on any part of it
select any font color using the "Font Color" drop down on the toolbar.
only the first part (before superscript) will change

same thing happens when using Format > Cells > Font Effects

also works if you select an area containing the cell, or a column, or a row.

I hadn't realised the XLS save / load was required as I had been working on this
spreadsheet for a while.

It is a problem with the xls format.

I can reproduce it here with xls format in DEV300m75 on WinXP.
The error does not occur in ods format.
