Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 1111
Setup GPFs, unable to install build 632
Last modified: 2003-12-06 14:52:34 UTC
Downloaded build 632 and unzipped it. Clicked on setup.exe, after a few seconds an error window appeared with the following msg: The instruction at "0x1c84bd6e" referenced memory at "0x006e76be". The memory could not be "read" and the setup aborts. Tried rebooting the PC, trying multiple times, no difference. I'm on W2K with SP1.
Hi, we all are testing OOo with Win2000: no >>ok<< if an installtion doesn't work. Not necessary to say that there are a lot of problems in 632, but it's not possible to find them if OOo632 isn't installable. To give us an idea what went wrong at your installation we need more information of your environment you use to test.
I'd be glad to help, let me know what info you need. I've had problems in the past on my PC with OO being able to run only if I changed the shortcuts to "Run as different user" and then run the programs as an Administrator (once again, I only had this issue with OO, all other apps worked fine). I tried the same with the OO setup.exe and I was able to start it, but it still GPF'ed later in the install... On my PC I have installed a ton of different apps (Visual C++, Visual Basic, Visual Interdev, Sybase PowerBuilder, Netbeans 3.2, MS Office 2000, JDK 1.2, JDK 1.3, JDK 1.4, Mozilla 0.9.1, Sybase CTLib, MS SQL Server libs, Oracle SQL Net, you name it...). I've never had any problems with installing any of them nor did I ever have to change any of the shortcuts to "Run as different user", but for OO it seems to happen all the time. Let me know what other info I can pass on to you. Cheers, Jacek
I also have encountered an install problem. I had build 627 installed previously, and installed build 632 in top of that one. The upgrade install crashed (sorry, did not keep that debug info), and so I decided to ininstall the poduct, and install fresh. It is in the subsequent installs that I have encountered the same errors as Mr. Furmankiewicz. I have the DrWatson debug file if it would be of any use to you. Additionally, I have installed to an alternate directory (C:\Apps\openoffice60), rather than the default the installer selects. I am going into the "custom" install option. I have deleted & re-downloaded the installer (including using the .tar.gz file rather than the .zip format I tried first).
I have seen a thread on the OO mailing list where quite a few people seem to have problems installing on W2K when they are not Administrators. It seems OO installs all of its config files to the Administrator profile, instead of "All users", like most other apps. Guys, I've installed OO on 2 different W2K machines, one at work, one at home. On both of them I have the same issue with not being able to setup build 632 or in case of 627 being forced to run it as Administrator. There is obviously something flaky with the way OO installs itself on W2K and just dismissing it all with "Resolved: works for me" is very frustrating for those of us who'd like to use OO and help find any bugs during the beta period. Cheers, Jacek
Hi Jacek, first thing: what we are doing has nothing to do with beta-testing. OOo is still in it's developing state, what we are testing is kind of alpha release. - I've been testing several settings (administrator, guest, standard user) on my W2K box and I've never had such problems like you: my setup was always starting, I've never got a GPF at the start of the installation. - I've got error message boxes if there's not enough disk space in "temp" folder or in the destination drive: every thing is correct. It is not intended that the administator has to make an installation that every user could access. Every user should have his own installation with his own configuration and his own configuration files. If you think we should change this write a feature or an enhancement. If I flag this issue as "Resolved: works for me" because it works for me, that it is 'resolved' depends on the radio button. What do you expect me to do? Clairvoyance is not one of my gifts, all cases I've tested are working?
Hi Olaf, I understand your frustration. The only think I know is that I installed 627 on 2 different W2K boxes and on both I was unable to run them as a regular user. See the link below, maybe it's related: http://www.openoffice.org/www-discuss/current/msg04118.html I was only able to run 627 if I flagged all shortcuts as "Run as different user" and then run them as administrator, even though I'm logged in under my user ID (which has admin privileges, but somehow it didn't make a difference). Then I tried upgrading to 632 and it GPF'ed right away. I will keep trying to see if I can get around it...is there any debug/error log I could pass on to you to help track it down? Thanks for your help, Jacek
Hello Jacek, the link you gave me matched what I've said: the user has to make his own configuration -> setup. To have a small client on your machine you can make an installation with the switch -net at a place where every user has access to. The user has to start setup in the program folder of this installation and he will get a thin client (~5MB) on his machine. In this posted link is nothing written that he can't install as 'user', he can't start an office as user that is installed by administrator. I don't know if someone planned to build OOo files with debug information. Due to the fact that your setup crashes immediatly after start there will be no setup.log. Perhaps dr.watson might give some information what happens. If you have such a log file it might help. You have written that you are "upgrading"? Does it mean that you install a 632 into the folder of an 627? If 'yes', please don't do so: at this state of developing it might be that some files of 627 are not compatible to 632.
See if my experimence could help. My system is AMD k7-700, 192MB ram, running Win2K Pro. I downloaded OO 632 and unzipped it at e:, which is FAT32. I tried to run setup and install it to c:, which is NTFS. When I ran setup.exe, the welcome window showed up, then a GPF. Few days later, I tried again. This time I can move to the module selection window, but while I was choosing modules, a GPF. Here's the drwtsn32 log, sorry for some chinese characters because I'm using TC verstion. However, I know you guys are very familiar with the format of logs. µoÂ¥ÃÀ³¥Îµ{¦¡¨Ò¥~: À³¥Îµ{¦¡: (pid=1992) µo¥îɶ¡: 2001/7/19 @ 23:25:58.317 ¨Ò¥~½s¸¹: c0000005 (¦s¨ú¹H³W) *----> ¨t ²Î ¸ê °T <----* ¹q¸£¦WºÙ: CKLS ¨Ã¥ÎªÌ¦WºÙ: ckl ³B²z¾¹¦WºÙ: 1 ³B²z¾¹Ãþ«¬: x86 Family 6 Model 2 Stepping 1 Windows 2000 ª©¥»: 5.0 ¥Ø«eªºª©¥»: 2195 Service Pack: 1 ¥Ø«eªºÃþ«¬: Uniprocessor Free µn°Oªº¤½¥q: µn°Oªº¾Ö¦³¤H: ³¯«a¨} *----> ¤u §@ ²M ³æ <----* 0 Idle.exe 8 System.exe 160 smss.exe 188 csrss.exe 184 winlogon.exe 236 services.exe 248 lsass.exe 396 svchost.exe 452 svchost.exe 500 spoolsv.exe 532 CTSvcCDA.exe 544 crypserv.exe 596 mgabg.exe 624 regsvc.exe 644 MSTask.exe 732 VetMsgNT.exe 772 WinMgmt.exe 788 ZipToA.exe 844 faxsvc.exe 1064 Explorer.exe 1088 fpdisp3.exe 1152 EM_EXEC.exe 1156 PDesk.exe 1172 starter.exe 1220 VetTray.exe 1056 RealPlay.exe 1264 lockdown2000.exe 1272 internat.exe 1204 IMGICON.exe 1376 naviscope.exe 1568 JetCar.exe 1560 Hotsync.exe 1864 Icq.exe 1764 netscp6.exe 1956 setup.exe 1992 setup.exe 1952 drwtsn32.exe 0 _Total.exe (01100000 - 01117000) (77F80000 - 77FFA000) (00230000 - 002E1000) (1C200000 - 1C215000) (002F0000 - 003D3000) (77D90000 - 77DEA000) (77E60000 - 77F35000) (77D20000 - 77D90000) (74FD0000 - 74FDA000) (74FB0000 - 74FC4000) (78000000 - 78046000) (74FA0000 - 74FA8000) (75010000 - 75020000) (77DF0000 - 77E55000) (77F40000 - 77F7C000) (77A30000 - 77B24000) (1C800000 - 1C865000) (69800000 - 69A42000) (77C50000 - 77C9A000) (77B30000 - 77BB9000) (1C600000 - 1C727000) (1C900000 - 1C929000) (003E0000 - 00418000) (00420000 - 0044F000) (00450000 - 00477000) (00480000 - 004B4000) (004C0000 - 004FE000) (777C0000 - 777DD000) (75E00000 - 75E1A000) (1CB00000 - 1CC92000) (1CA00000 - 1CAC6000) (00500000 - 0058D000) (1D380000 - 1D3D7000) (00590000 - 005D8000) (005E0000 - 005E6000) (777E0000 - 777E7000) (75950000 - 75956000) (005F0000 - 005F6000) (77530000 - 77560000) (6E260000 - 6E266000) (10000000 - 10012000) (00D20000 - 00D41000) (00E60000 - 00E7E000) (00EC0000 - 00ED6000) (00EE0000 - 00EE7000) (00EF0000 - 00EFD000) (00F00000 - 00F0D000) (00F10000 - 00F21000) (00F30000 - 00F3F000) (00F40000 - 00F57000) (00F60000 - 00F76000) (010A0000 - 010B5000) (01230000 - 01258000) (012D0000 - 012EB000) (77990000 - 77A25000) (30000000 - 30012000) (691D0000 - 69255000) (77810000 - 7784C000) (77080000 - 770A3000) (01A90000 - 01A98000) °õ¦æ¤Þ½uÃѧO½X 0x6cc ªºª¬ºA¶É¦L eax=ffffffff ebx=00000000 ecx=00000000 edx=00000000 esi=0012f734 edi=00000000 eip=002fb37b esp=0012f644 ebp=0012f644 iopl=0 nv up ei pl nz ac po nc cs=001b ss=0023 ds=0023 es=0023 fs=003b gs=0000 efl=00000216 Â¥\¯à : osl_decrementInterlockedCount 002fb370 55 push ebp 002fb371 8bec mov ebp,esp 002fb373 8b4d08 mov ecx,[ebp+0x8] ss:0103cc1a=???????? Hello, we haven't found a case that we can't install OOo or our inhouse StarOffice versions on Win2000. There have been some problems with WinME/98, but they don't take effect on Win2000. It's not that we are not interested in fixing bugs, but for us this is not a bug in OOo. We think that this is a problem on your computer.
Just a side note, I am not getting any installation related issues on both of my W2K boxes with builds 633 and 638, so you guys must have fixes something in there (even the user permissions problems I was having). On a side note, as a developer myself I find this statement disconcerning: >>It's not that we are not interested in fixing bugs, but for us this >>is not a bug in OOo. We think that this is a problem on your >>computer. Sorry it was not. If all OTHER software works on my computer and only OO doesn't, then it's not a problem with my PC, but a problem with OO not handling all possible VALID configurations (whatever they might be). Fortunately enough though, this issue seems to have been fixed indirectly in the latest two builds anyway. Good work!
