Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 112598
really slow graphics in Impress module
Last modified: 2010-06-23 09:46:24 UTC
I was in the middle of editing a presentation, when I decided to upgrade from v2.0 to 3.2.1. I found it really annoying, how slow the new program version is. Also I saw a really high CPU load, although my computer is not old (3 years Intel Core Duo with Suse Linux 10.2 installed). On older computers it will be unusable. See attached a little presentation. Select second page (with almost no text). Click on text somwhere to select text box. "Take" text box window frame and try to move it a bit. --> this takes several seconds now until the window is updated again, but was very quick in OO v2.0.

3.2.1 is a OOO320_m18. Please have a try to dedactivate hardware acceleration or anti aliasing in tools/options/OpenOffice/view/Graphic output. Is this an original OOo version or from some other distributor? Thanks.
When I switched off anti aliasing in tools/options/OpenOffice/view/Graphic output (German version: Extras/Optionen/OpenOffice.org/Ansicht/Graphikausgabe/"Antialiasing benutzen"), the problem was solved. The option "hardware acceleration" at the same location was correctly greyed/deactivated. This was an original version, not from a distributor.
Reassigned. Any clues on this?
Openoffice could detect, whether direct rendering is available and/or CPU is quick, and deactivate anti-aliasing otherwise.
AW->karstenburger: Thanks for the mail, but this is known. AntiAliasing comes with some cost, that's why it can be switched off. You still have all the goodies of the new version when switching AA off. Problem is that AA needs kinda HW-support, and when You say it's slow on Your system and the HW-flag is greyed out, please switch off AA. It's a nice idea to do that automatically, but as You surely know OOo runs on all kinds of OSes and HWs, sothis functionality is simply not there. We already do our best; on Linux e.g. the availability of XRender is checked and if not there, AA is already switched off automatically. Doing more will bring all people up on the mailing lists which complain that AA is 'brokenÄ on their machines. XRender and HW-support is available now for most machines/OSes, thus the default is okay. We know it can get slow on other systems, that's why we kept the 'switch AA off' option at all. We are also speeding up graphics processing where we can; e.g in CWS vcl111 is a new trapezoid decomposer which is needed to paint anything on XRender AAed at all. This will speedup things, too, but not on OOo 3.2.1 codeline, but on 3.3. HTH!
Thank you very much, this is ok for me.
AW: Okay, closing.
