Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 112915
Calc: Extreme performance issue with a file
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:44:27 UTC
Open the attached .xls file, Calc crawls to death and becomes totally unusable. This is on OOo 3.2.0 (OOO320m12, build 9483) on Gentoo Linux. Tried creating new profile, doesn't help.

Nothing official, just my two cents... Talk to the people you got the file from. The document contains over 10,000 copies of two small images: one is 1x1, the other is 11x11, all transparent--web bugs would be my guess. If you turn off graphics (Tools > Options > OOo Calc > View > Objects > Objects/Graphics: Hide, then the file works normally.
Thanks for taking the time to pinpoint the root cause of the problem. I just tried to open the file in MS Office 2007, and apparently MS Office can deal with the file just fine with no apparent performance problem. I think having 10000 images in a file is probably way beyond what most people would see, so the file itself is obviously problematic; however, since MS Office can open the file fine, I think I will just leave this issue as a low priority enhancement.
