Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 113260
improved information display in OOo file dialogs
Last modified: 2014-01-14 13:17:01 UTC
I wonder if it would be possible to consider some simple improvements to the OOo file dialogs, to make them just a bit more useful and a little easier to use? The most important change would be to 1) Make more room for the file names, so that the dialog displays as much of the file name as possible. The current dialog has extra space available while the file names are truncated. The second improvement would be to 2) Change the file type label text, so that the label starts with the most important information. For example, the current dialog shows the types for two files as "OpenDocument Text", and "OpenDocument Spreadsheet" and then truncates the labels at the right, so that both show only "OpenDocument T" and "OpenDocument S". The truncated information looks nearly the same for both files and is difficult--if not impossible--for the user to understand. If the labels were instead something like "Text Document (ODF)" and "Spreadsheet (ODF)", then a truncated type label would still leave the most important information for the user. This label style is already used in the dialog for images: "Graphics (jpg)" The information in the size and date columns could also be displayed more efficiently, making more room available for the file names. I would be happy to propose some improved file type labels if someone can point me to the current list--I can't find where the file type labels come from in the OOo source.
