Description thaun 2010-09-16 12:36:01 UTC
When selecting text or placing the cursor in the input line, the visible and the
effective cursor position can differ by several characters. This occurs
especially for cells with long text or formula.

I will attach a screenshot with an example. The example text is:

This is a long example text that demonstrates the problem that selecting
characters is problematic

in the input line I highlighted: "aracters is proble" however, below in the cell
the sequence "haracters is probl" is highlighted and when I copy-paste the text
the latter sequence is pasted.

Steps to reproduce:
1. enter a long formula or a long text into one single cell
2. press enter
3. click on the cell to make it active
4. in the input line, select some text
5. note that the selected text in the input line differs from the selected text
shown in the cell below
5. copy and paste that text into another cell
6. note that the pasted text differs from the text selected in the input line

expected result: the selected and the pasted text should be identical
actual result: the selected and the pasted text differ

This can be very annoying because editing text in the input line leads to
unpredictable results.

The bug actually was and is already described here. (e.g. 100303, 102903)
It occurs not only when selecting text, but every time you try to set the cursor in an already written (justified) paragraph (-> 100303).
Pretty annoying, yes and an impediment for professional use.
