Description estadtherr 2010-11-20 05:06:54 UTC
After formatting a document to a "User" page size of 5.5 (w) x 8.5 (h), the "Print" dialog still believes it is
printing an 8.5x11 page (as shown in the preview on the "Print" dialog).

To reproduce:
* Start OOo Writer
* Create a new document
* Select Format->Page... and choose the "Page" tab
* Select "User" for the format
* Enter "5.5" for the width (in inches)
* Enter "8.5" for the height (in inches)
* Optionally, enter some text on the page to use as a reference in the Print dialog
* Select File->Print...

Note that the page size in the preview is a normal 8.5 x 11 page, not the 5.5x8.5 size chosen in
"Format->Page..."

Note also that bringing up the "Format->Page..." window again and viewing the "Page" tab shows a
blank value for the "Format" option menu.

with OOO330m16 on Solaris Sparc I can see the same wrong page format in the
print preview dialog, but when opening the format dialog again the user-defined
format is still shown

Please try the version DEV300m93, http://download.openoffice.org/next/. There
you will get a new print dialog. It shows not only a print preview, but width
and height of the paper sheet, which OOo believes the printer has got.

If the printer does not "tell" in the printer driver, that it is capable of
5.5"x8.5" paper, then OOo uses a paper size, which the printer is capable and is
large enough to print the document. If you use a custom paper size it is likely
that you have to set the printer to that paper size too. So click on 'printer
properties' and add the size to your printer.

regina - I will try that version to see if it makes a difference, but your
hypothesis about the printer not having a matching pre-configured paper size
isn't the issue I was seeing. Other arbitrary "User" paper sizes chosen in the
OOo Format->Page->Page dialog showed up correctly in the printer window. My
workaround to print my 5.5x8.5 page was to choose a 5.5x9.5 size in OOo and add
1" to the bottom margin. This worked, showing the correct (too-tall) size in the
printer window. There seems to be something unique about that 5.5x8.5 size.

Comment 6 estadtherr 2010-11-27 23:17:46 UTC
I tried the DEV300m93 version. It seemed to show the correct aspect ratio in the print window for a 5.5 x
8.5 page size (see attachment), although I could not see the display of the width and height of the paper
sheet as you described. Can you tell me where to find that?

Print dialog in WinXP
Comment 8 Regina Henschel 2010-11-27 23:51:24 UTC
estadtherr: It seems the print dialog in WinXP (see attached screeshot) is very
different from yours.
Comment 9 estadtherr 2010-11-27 23:55:46 UTC
Where does that leave this issue? Will I have to run this developer build to be able to use my custom page
sizes, or will whatever deltas in the developer build that fixed this issue make their way into a stable
release anytime soon?

DEV300m93 will eventually become OOo 3.4. The difference in the dialogs is
because on the Mac the system native print dialog gets used; to see the one
regina described you would use the OOo one by turning it on in Preferences ->
OpenOffice.org->General->"Use OpenOffice.org print dialogs".

Not reproduce with AOO 4.1.5 and Windows 7 x64 Pro
I use PDF Creator as default printer
A document in 5.5 x 8.5" is correctly printed.
Output PDF is in same dimensions.
