Description vliscony 2010-12-12 21:08:33 UTC
This issue has been with me for a while, I'm running WinXP/SR3, and OO3.2.1 but
the issue was there since version 3.0 - whenever I need to open or save a
document to/from a directory other than the default directory, it freezes when
I load or save, and this happens repeatedly, as in several times a day.

There is some dumb luck involved, and usually after a few tries I do manage to
solve it, but as a precaution I first save a doc to whatever directory I'm in
at that time.
For loading documents my workaround has become to open with windows explorer:
locate the file and "Open With" OOW. This avoids the problem.

Cannot reproduce on my XP. Does this only happen with Writer?
Do you try to save on special network drives?
Comment 2 vliscony 2010-12-17 05:10:07 UTC
I rarely use anything else but writer..., and my drive is partitioned in C:, D:
and E, with the programs on C: data on D: and miscellaneous stuff on E:

OK, as long as we are not able to reproduce this, could you please try if this
happens also with any other OOo application?
Is the target drive formatted with any special file system?
Do you work with OpenOffice File dialog or the system ones
(Tools.Options.OpenOffice.General)?
Comment 4 vliscony 2010-12-22 21:00:34 UTC
Aha! My C: drive is NTFS, and that's where the program resides, and my D: drive
where the data resides is FAT32

Might this be the issue?

I just tried it in calc and the same problem seems to occur. Loaded a spreadsheet
from a couple of directories down, and voila, calc froze up on me the same way.

So, I guess I could move the program from C: to D: and if that solves it, that's
the proof of your suspicion.
Comment 5 michael.ruess 2010-12-23 08:45:31 UTC
OK, so this problem is not Writer specific.
Some other would be also interesting:

 - what I already asked above: Do you work with OpenOffice File dialog or the
system ones
(Tools.Options.OpenOffice.General)?

Does this happen when you try to open the "Save as" dialog or when you
physically save the file on mentioned drive?

Maybe the Fat32 drive is broken and needs some repair?
Comment 6 vliscony 2010-12-24 12:52:41 UTC
OK, I just switched to the Open Office file save dialogs, and sofar that seems to
cure the problem...
As to the drive, there appear to be no health issues, and it's only 47% occupied,
which I'd consider hardly critical.
Mysterious, but thanks.
I'll report back here after a few days to confirm my findings re using the OO
file dialogs.

We should have enough info here to confirm or not
Comment 9 Alex 2013-07-22 18:08:54 UTC
I cannot reproduce it on Win7
