Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 116243
execution of database operations measurably slower in Ubuntu than Windows
Last modified: 2013-04-02 19:05:46 UTC
I have a database, Inventory, created in OOo Base 3,2 or earlier. When running this database in OOo 3.3 RC8 (actually all the RC of 3.3) on Ubuntu (10.10) vs Windows (Vista), I observed than the database ran much slower on Ubuntu than Windows. I added some simple code to measure the elapsed time differnence when opening on of the Forms (USAGE). Open the attached database, go to Forms, and Select and Open form USAGE. For the "Yellow" boxes, (44 records), it akes about 5 seconds to display in Ubuntu and 0 seconds in Windows.. To repeat the test, close the form and start over. To change to "Green" (80 records), after displaying the Yellow, select Green from the drop-down vbox, and let this form load. Then close the form, and start again. The average time to display the Green form is 12 seconds on Ubuntu and 1 second on Windows. I might expect some difference between the platforms, but not orders of mnagnitude differences. I use the time differences discussed in http://flylib.com/books/en/4.290.1.50/1/

It works for me in OOo 3.3RC8 with same speed on ubuntu 10.10 32 bit with same speed as on win7 32bit version. You use 32 bit version of OOo, on ubuntu?
On Ubuntu 10.10, I am using 64-bit Ubuntu. However on Windows, it is 32-bit Vista.
Then needs somebody who can check it on 64bit ubuntu, too.
My computer is an 64-bit Desktop HP Pavilion a6430f 3-core processor running at 2.1 GHZ. I have executed this database on a 32-bit Ubuntu OS, and still have the same problem as reported. I have also tried OpenSUSE 11.3 Live CD and Fedora 13 with the same results. On Linux Mint 10, the performance is normal or as expected. I do not kno enough about these various Linux systems to be able to guess a reason for the slow performance.
What version of Java you use? Update Java to 1.6.0_23 at least.
I am running Java 1.6.0_23 on Ubuntu. It does not make a difference. If there is another later version, let me know where to access it and I will try it.
