Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 117337
Certain Slides Won't Print With Notes Option
Last modified: 2017-05-20 11:08:16 UTC
When you attempt to print Impress presentations, if you select that you want to print in Notes view...the slides appear just as a white box. What I have found is that this seems to happen with slides built before 3.3. If you create new slides within the same document, it then works. Attaching screenshot that clearly shows the issue, along with sample document.
Created attachment 76078 [details] Shows that this page appears as a white box, no thumbnail is rendered
Created attachment 76079 [details] Document, pages created before 3.3 appear as white.
Reproducible when switching to slide 3 or 4, even under windows.
Created attachment 76566 [details] OOo and PowerPowent - Print Preview of Slide Notes
I was able to reproduce and confirm that the issue exists in - * OOo 3.3 and 3.4 (Dev 3.4.0 DEV300m106 (Build: 9582)) versions on three different Windows platforms – Windows XP (Version 2002 SP3 Intel(RO Core™2 CPU, 660 @2.40GHz, 2.00GB of RAM) Windows Vista Home Premium -64 bit OS (SP2)-Dell/Model: Studio XPS 435MT, Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @2.67GHz, Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB 7 Home Premium (Intel® Core™i7 CPU Q740 @ 1.73GHz, RAM4.00GB, 64-bit). This inconsistency was also reproduced in MS PowerPoint 2007. The attached dlk.odp file was used in all the executed tests. Steps (Same for Each Operating System Above): 1. Launch OpenOffice Impress 2. Open the attached dlk.odp file (another way to open it is by right-clicking and selecting Open With>OpenOffice Impress) 3. Once the presentation is displayed on the screen, click to select File> Print to bring up the document print setup 4. The print dialog should open. Under the General tab: - In the ‘Range and copies’ section , Select the ’All Slides’ radio button - In the ‘Print’ section, Select Notes from the Print dropdown list Note: There should be a document preview frame displayed on the left of the dialog with page ‘count/total of pages’, and left and right arrow icon buttons. 5. From the document preview click on the right button to go through the presentation. At Slide 3 the page turned blank and from this point on the rest of the pages appeared blank. Hit Print to print handout notes. Results: Document is printed and starting with slide 3, the notes appear and print blank. Here is a link of a video of how to reproduce it http://www.screencast.com/t/adMjvtvTMfl *Follow-up tests* 1. Rearrange the slide order - Move slides 3 & 4 to the beginning or end of the presentation 2. Create a new presentation and copy over all the slides 3. Insert slides 3 & 4 into a random presentation 4. Run all the tests in MS PowerPoint Results: The same 2 slides appeared and printed blank each time for any of the tests that were executed. I viewed a few random PowerPoint presentations but I was not able to recreate this inconsistency with any of those without these two slides. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was not able to figure out what was different about slides 3 and 4. I do think that this inconsistency may cause unnecessary aggravation and embarrassment to the users in case they attempt to print this or similar presentation notes which may then be printed as blank pages. I think this issue might be worth looking into since the document was created in OpenOffice even though the odd behavior persists when previewed in MS PowerPoint.

Bug 117337 - Certain Slides Won't Print With Notes Option I was able to reproduce the bug in Open Office 3.4 AOO340m1(build9590)- Rev.1325589 I was using an ASUS laptop with the following: OS: Windows 7 Premium, CPU: Intel core i3 2350M@2.3GHz, RAM: 6GB Steps: 1. Open OO Impress. 2. Right click link to file 7609 below, which is attached to this report. 3. Select "Open With". 4. Select "Open Office Impress". Impress will appear on the screen presenting the file or the Open Office icon at the bottom of the screen will flash and you click and Impress will appear. 5. Click "File" at the top left of the screen. The print window will appear. 6. Select "All Slides" from the Range and Copies section. 7. In the Print section,go to Document and select "notes" from the drop down menu. 8. In the preview section in the left of the Print window, click the right arrow to advance the slides. 9. Repeat these steps for files 76078 and 76566. (Also attached to this report.) My results were varied with the files that were attached to the report, and the files that I had: For files 76078 and 76566, there was only one slide and the Print window did not have the option to select "notes". For file 76079, the results were the same as described by ehouser. Slides 1 and 2 appeared as they should, but slides 3, 4 and 5 were blank and white when advanced by the arrow. They printed out the same way on the printer. The first file of mine that I ran was an Office 2007 power point presentation. The second was an Office 2010 power point. Both of them displayed as they should. There were 28 slides on the first file and 114 on the second. I did not print them, but I advanced several of them with the arrow and they were all normal. By what the first tester said about the files attached to the report, I assume that they were created in Impress.
It is possible that files 76078 and 76566 are damaged, because they only have one slide which would not be sufficient to demonstrate the failure. It seems that the testers would have attached a file with more than one slide. The quality of these slides is poor also which indicates the file could be damaged. File 76079 could also be damaged, too, causing slides 3 through 5 to not print in notes. This would explain why the other files that I ran did not have this failure. The problem could be with the attached files and not with the program. If this is not the case, this bug should be fixed as soon as possible. It is common practice for presenters to print out note versions of the slides to give as handouts to the audience to follow and take notes as the slides are shown. Not being able to do this would be a serious issue for many presenters.
only reproducable against the attached file. need more info
I replicated the bug reported using the attachment provided on the following version of Open Office software. Open Office 3.4.1 AOO341m1(build9593)- Rev.1372282 But I could not reproduce with any other files.
Created attachment 79829 [details] Attachment image of Impress print dialog screen Print dialog showing the slides as blank.
