Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 117931
Printing in OO 3.3 *much* slower than printing in OO 3.2.x
Last modified: 2018-07-04 16:04:42 UTC
Created attachment 76445 [details] sample file for printing OpenOffice 3.3 takes far longer to prepare a very simple word-processing document for printing (see attachment) on a Windows Vista SP2 machine than OpenOffice 3.2.1 did. (That is, the stage where it enumerates the pages being printed takes minutes instead of seconds. Printer is hp OfficeJet Pro 8500.)
Related to bug #65074

I have tested with a different document just to make sure the problem is with the program and not the document. (same thing occurs.)
Did the method by which the OpenOffice application communicates with the printer driver change between version 3.2 and 3.3? If so then that is probably at the root of the problem. I have Windows Vista service pack 2, by the way. (Printer is an hp OfficeJet Pro 8500.)
getting rid of value "enhancement" for field "severity". For enhancement the field "issue type" shall be used.
I have verified the problem still occurs with OpenOffice.org version 3.4.1. Did the method by which the OpenOffice application communicates with the printer driver change between version 3.2 and 3.3? The problem occurs with Windows Vista Home Basic, service pack 2, and an hp OfficeJet Pro 8500 printer.
Created attachment 83494 [details] screenshot I have retested using OpenOffice 4.1 with a completely different printer. With the Canon PS3_v14.00 driver for an ImageRunner 7105 copier (which can be used as a high-speed printer), for a 100-page document, OpenOffice 4.1's printing status box (screenshot attached) remains up for 37 seconds. Another computer has OpenOffice 3.2.1 and the Canon PCL6 v14.00 INF driver for the same ImageRunner 7105 machine, and the document spools to be printed, so the status box will complete/disappear almost instantaneously. (This is an exceptionally fast printer, so on the computer with OpenOffice 4.1, the printing status box appears while the document is being printed, whereas on the OpenOffice 3.2.1 computer you can resume work on the computer right away without waiting the minute or so that it takes to actually print the document.)
I just upgraded the computer (which I had been keeping on OpenOffice 3.2.1 due to this bug) and, like the other computer, the printing performance became slower. On the HP LaserJet P2035, printing is insanely slow, and I didn't even time it. On the networked ImageRunner 7105 (this computer uses the Canon PCL6 v14.00 INF driver instead of the Canon PS3_v14.00 driver which I tested on the other computer), when I print a 70-page document, OpenOffice 4.1's printing status box ("Printing Page __ of 70") remains up for 21 seconds. (In OpenOffice 3.2.1 the printing-status box would appear then disappear instantaneously because the document spools in the background.)
So Vista and these OOo builds are obsolete now
