Description magrawal 2003-02-24 21:47:49 UTC
I find that the icons for Calc and Writer on windows explorer are not very
distinct. FOr example, compare how easy it is to distinguish an SPSS file
because of its bright red icon and word documents because of their bright blue
icon, compared to the pale icons for Writer documents and Calc spreadsheets.

I use Openoffice as my default suite, so these are the icons I see in Explorer
for all documents and spreadsheets.

Various themes are being developed, for example, the ximian icon set. I feel
that the acceptance and use of particular themes is subjective. Perhaps the
opportunity to change themes/icon sets is appropriate.

I feel that this issue is one that needs to be assigned to UI, if it is to be
kept open.

Please advise.

All I am trying to say is that the icon associated with each OO application in
the file explorer should be very distinct in every way. One icon may be all
blue, another all red, another all green and so on. The icon for writer may have
a big W, the icon for Calc can have a big C etc. This way, even in the most
casual browsing of a directory, every type of OO file will be very distinctly
noticeable.

This is a real issue, and it affects the accessibility of OOo for visually
impaired users as well as for normal users. A very clear set of icons with, for
instance, a clear W for Writer, C for Calc, D for Draw, is needed.

reset priority to three, please explain the urgency of the issue
Comment 6 magrawal 2004-07-19 13:51:55 UTC
Well, I don't remember what I was thinking when I gave it the high priority.
However, I believe that this is a distinct problem in OO that can be addressed
relatively easily. P3 may be appropriate using the current priority scheme, but
if there would be a way to prioritize issues on a cost-benefit basis, then this
issue would definitely be a P1.
