Shows how a custom bullet type starting with a URL has underline between bullet and text

Create new Writer document.
Create a new line starting with a URL, for example,
http://openoffice.com
Format as a bullet with a custom graphic, like so:
Format > Bullets and Numbering... > Graphics
Choose the first bullet, a blue circle.
Click OK.
The space between the bullet and the URL is now underlined because it's a link. There should be no underline.
Comment 1 Mark Vasko 2012-02-13 02:39:16 UTC
I was able to replicate this problem on with the following configurations:

OOo 3.3.0 (OOO330m20 - build:9567), with Windows 7 service pack 1
OOo 3.4.0 (OOO340m0 - build:9583), with Windows 7 service pack 1

I tested several of the graphic style bullets and the problem does not seem to happen with all styles but instead only with some graphics. Some examples that cause the bug are:

- diamond styles such as bluediamd.gif
- basic circle styles such as redball.gif
- some non basic circle shapes such as bluered.gif
- basic square styles such as greensqare.gif
- corner styles such as corner_2.gif
- coffee bean styles such as coffee_5.gif
- popcorn styles such as popcorn_1.gif

Graphic styles that do not seem to cause the problem:

- star shapes such as bluestar.gif
- arrow shapes such as redarrow.gif
- some non basic circle shapes such as golfball.gif and darkball.gif

I noticed that, visually speaking, the corner, coffee and popcorn styles seem to have more a pronounced size difference than other graphics that exhibit the problem. I tried switching to the bullets tab in the bullets and numbering dialog box, changing the style to one of those styles and then changing back to the graphics options. This did not seem to affect/correct the problem. I also tested this with other tabs in the bullets and numbering dialog box such as numbering type options, and outline options. Neither seemed to affect the bug.

I have added an attachment of the corner_1.gif example as well.

I'm on OOo 3.4.0 (OOO340m0 - build:9583), with Windows 7 service pack 1

I see everything that Mark sees EXCEPT that I see the underline with bluestar.gif and redarrow.gif. Oddly, with redarrow.gif, the first part of the underlined hyperlink is red, then it goes to blue.

getting rid of value "enhancement" for field "severity".
For enhancement the field "issue type" shall be used.

Build and Configuration Information: AOO400m3(Build:9702) - Rev. 150370
Hardware: HP Laptop
OS: Windows 7 Professional SP1

I replicated this bug on OOo 4.0.0 using the following steps:
1) Open OO Writer
2) Type the following: http://openoffice.org
3) Click at the beginning of the URL
4) Select Format -> Bullets and Numbering…
5) Then select Graphics
6) Then select redarrow.gif

Notice that the bug is present. The space between the end of the arrow and the start of the URL is underlined. Furthermore, the underline is the same color blue as the URL’s underline.

The only two graphics bullet styles that do not produce the bug are:
Bullet18-Asterisk-LightBlue.svg
Bullet21-Arrow-Blue.svg

In all other graphics bullet styles, the bug is present with a blue colored underline between the end of the bullet and the start of the URL.

Also, the following graphics bullet styles produce extremely large(r) underlined spaces between the end of the bullet and the start of the URL:
Coffee_1.gif
Coffee_2.gif
Coffee_3.gif
Coffee_4.gif
Coffee_5.gif
Corner_1.gif
Corner_2.gif
Corner_3.gif
Corner_4.gif
Pebble_1.gif
Pebble_2.gif
Pebble_3.gif
Popcorn_1.gif
Popcorn_2.gif

I have also added an attachment displaying the two graphics bullet styles that do not display the bug

Two graphics bullet styles in OO 4.0.0 that do not display the bug

Was able to reproduce bug on OpenOffice 4.0.1 Build:9714 Rev. 1524958 on Mac OS X 10.8.5

The bug might have something to with the file size of the bullet point or the file type as svg files do not produce this bug.

I was able to replicate this bug using tomcampbell's method in Windows 7 64 bit, AOO401m5(Build:9714).
This bug occurred with every bullet style I tried.

This may occur due to how these graphical bullets choose the formatting for the space added between the bullet and the text.

When the link was the first text after the bullet, the space was underlined. I tried inserting an unformatted letter between the bullet and the link, and the underline went away.

When I added a background highlight to the letter, the space between it and the bullet also became highlighted, even though it was not selected.

This leads me to believe that the graphic bullets grab the formatting of the first character in the bulleted text for the added space after the bullet.

Comments for OOo database:
I was able to recreate this issue. See attached examples.
Issue: Functionality of Graphic bullets with URLs in Open Office Writer.

Description: Several graphic bullets in Open Office Writer create an underline between the bullet and the beginning of the URL text when user moves off the the line of text containing the URL.

Version : I recreated this issue using, Apache Open Office 4.0.1 (AOO401m5 - Build: 9714) - Rev. 1524958 with Windows 7, Version 6.1, Build 7601: Service Pack 1

Test Steps to recreate the issue:
1. Open Apache Open Office Writer using the above documented version.
2. Create a New documents in Writer. Also occurs when retrieve a Saved Document in AOO Writer.
3. At the blinking cursor, type the following UR: http://OpenOffice.com.
4. In the Tool Bar, Click on Format>Bullets and Numbering>Graphics Tab.
5. Under Selection on the Graphic Tab, Click on a graphic bullet. Note: Mouse over the graphic bullet to display name, repeat for each bullet used to view the name. Document the graphic bullet name for later reference.
6. Click on Ok.
7. Graphic Tab closes and user returns to Text document.
8. Note, the underline does not display at this point.
9. Press the enter key to move off the line of text, the underline now displays between the bullet and the URL. This bug also occurs when you press the Tab arrow to move off the line of text.

Additional Tests:
I tested several of the graphic bullet types, but not all. I was able to recreate this issue with every graphic bullet type I selected. I was also able to recreate this issue using the red arrow.gif as well as the blue star.gif. I also created this issue using the coffee_4.gif, and I visually noticed an unusually long underline displayed between the bullet and the beginning of the URL text. I repeated this test again using the coffee_1.gif and instead of pressing the enter key I pressed the tab key which moved the cursor down to the next lined of text. I visually notice this also created a very long line between the graphic bullet and the URL.

Comments:
I would tag this issue as a visual annoyance to customers rating and as a low/medium priority and severity to fix. The extension of the underline between the graphic bullet and the text in the URL may seem as messy or unprofessional, depending on the viewpoint of the customer. I was also able to recreate this bug using a previously saved document from Open Office Writer using the above documented version.

If graphical bullets are used in a list and the list entry is (begins with) a hyperlink, the space between graphical bullet and hyperlink is also formatted as hyperlink.

The issue is independent from the way how the list is created. It also appears if a normal list (default bullets) is changed to a list with graphics as bullets.

Not reproducible with OOo 2.4.
