Description a2011 2011-09-24 17:42:25 UTC
While examining the file submitted as bug#117872, I discovered that slides containing lines of notes created in PowerPoint 2007 appear in Impress (build m106) on the Notes tab with the text rendered in a single-character column.

By trying to click on the notes text in Impress to edit it, I eventually discovered that the notes text area appears to be sizing to one character tall and one character wide, located in the top left corner of the slide while in the Notes tab view. There also appears to be another text area of the same size in the same location which contains the slide number. While testing, I sometimes selected the page-number text area by mistake instead of the notes-text text area.

In the linked bug#117872, the attached presentation has notes on slides 3-9 and 11. There's quite a lot in that file, but my testing showed that this problem was easily generated in any file.

To replicate:
1. Use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a document and add notes to any slide.
2. Save as a pptx file.
3. Open that file in Impress and select the Notes tab view.
4. Observe that the notes you entered render in a single-character-wide column along the left side of the slide view.
5. Click in the top-left corner until you get a blue square with the angled arrow over it. Drag down and right to enlarge the box. (If the text doesn't reflow into lines, go back to the top-left corner and try again, because you got the controls for the text area containing the slide number instead of the text area containing the text. You may need to drag the text area containing the number out of the way to access the text area containing the notes.)

Interestingly, the problem does not appear if the notes are originally created in Impress, saved as ppt file, opened and amended in PowerPoint 2007, saved there, and reopened in Impress. Under those conditions, the notes text and any new notes added in PowerPoint render in lines under the Notes tab view.

I successfully replicated the bug on OOo-dev 3.4 DEV300m106(build:9582) with Windows 7(x86)
-Saved a pptx with a slide with something written on it. I added a note below the slide.
-I opened in Impress, went to notes and the note was written in 1 character length going down the far right end of the page. It also does not show the slide in the notes section either with the notes.
This bug does not come up if saved in a 97-03 format. The slide and notes below it showed correctly.
This could be important to the user if they were to rely on these notes for a presentation if they were to have done their work on PowerPoint and moved to Open Office for the presentation. While this is not a critical bug it could cause for a bad day if it happened to the user.

I was also able to replicate the bug using the .pptx powerpoint from Microsoft Powerpoint 2010. I had written a long note in Microsoft Powerpoint on a slide. When opening the file in Impress, whether it is by read-only or open copy, it would not show the note properly. Like the OP has said, it would show the text as 1 character length on the left side of the page stretching passed the bottom of the page to the gray area. Not all the text would show due to the scrollbar stopping halfway. In a paragraph of 3 sentences, only the first sentence would stretch to the bottom. I noticed that Nowicked experienced the same problem, but it was to the right of the page. My version is also OOo-dev 3.4 DEV300m106 running on 64-bit Win 7. Grabbing the blue top-left corner square and stretching it out brought back all the notes in the normal format.

Here's something new that I found out. After correcting it using the blue square, I saved the file as .ppt. Then, I opened the file using Microsoft Powerpoint and saved the file to .pptx. When I opened this file in Impress, the note format did not have any problems. It was the same normal format that I had saved earlier. This bug does not occur when saving it from .ppt (in Impress) to .pptx (in PowerPoint).

From .pptx (PowerPoint) to opening in Impress => WRONG NOTE FORMAT
From .ppt (PowerPoint) to opening in Impress => correct format
From .ppt (Impressed) to saving as .pptx (Powerpoint) to opening in Impress => correct format
From .ppt (PowerPoint) to saving as .pptx (Powerpoint) to opening in Impress => WRONG NOTE FORMAT

In summary, the error only occurs when the file comes from Microsoft Powerpoint as .pptx without going through Impress at all. If the file is fixed in Impress and saved as .pptx through Microsoft Powerpoint, then the note format is correct.

I can reproduce this on XP with Aoo_trunk 1376366
