Description Isabelle Hakala 2012-06-14 11:35:55 UTC
The auto-recovery feature does not actually save anything. I am on a Windows Vista machine and it decided to randomly reboot to install updates and just KILLED Open Office without asking me to save first. Once rebooted I opened Open Office and it offered to recover all 4 of my documents, and not a single one of them had any of the changes I had made over the past hour since saving last. Not only does the AUTO RECOVERY not work there is NO AUTO SAVE FEATURE. WHY NOT???

This is in OO Writer. When recovering it gave me an error message and would not allow me to try to recover them again. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS IMPORTANT JUST ADD A FRIGGIN AUTOSAVE FEATURE. There isn't even an EXTENSION for it. If I could write one I would just do it. How hard can it be to just have the document autosave every 5 minutes?

Yes, I realize that you are not likely to be able to recreate this bug. But that doesn't mean you can't fix the underlying problem... there is no AUTO SAVE feature.

Hi Isabelle,I can't reproduce in the build AOO_Rev.1359641.

Repeat step:
1.launch oo and new a text document
2.set auto-save as 1 minute
3.input some text and wait some minutes
4.kill the OO application process
5.restart the OO
6.remind to recovery the document
7.can recovery the document successfully

so suggest you to try in the latest build, maybe it has resolved~

I also can't reproduce it with latest build.

Isabelle, Please try it in latest build.

Cannot reproduce. OpenOffice does have auto-save. That is what auto-recovery is based on. In general we ask for bug reports only to the issue tracker, with specific steps on reproducing the bug. For general support queries we recommend the community support forum at http://forum.openoffice.org

Moving back to UNCONFIRMED after email conversation with Isabelle.

Not sure if we will be able to confirm this, but I'd recommend a test like this:

1) Load an existing document into Writer on a Windows machine (Vista, 7 or 8)

2) Made change to the document but don't save the document.

3) Trigger a Windows automated shutdown, the kind that occurs when Windows installs a critical security patch and forces a reboot.

Note: I have no idea how to make this happen under test conditions, so we'll need to be clever.

4) After the machine reboots, start up Writer and see if you are prompted to recover the document work-in-progress. If you are not prompted, or if the recovered document does not contain the unsaved changes, then the bug is confirmed.

It is plausible that the recover logic is triggered only by exception handling in a crash situation, but is bypassed in this scenario, if OpenOffice thinks this is a "normal" shut down situation.

The originator indicated there was an error message but did not provide details about the message or the text. Request the originator attempt to replicate the issue and provide the text from the error message.
Also request the originator provide the settings of the Auto Recovery options that were set at the time of the issue.

Replicating the Report
There were no detailed instructions on how to replicate the bug as the originator described. The originator did report that the PC executed an auto re-boot to install updates, which shut down all applications. Neither Open Office nor Windows Vista provided an opportunity to save any open work prior to the shut down. I attempted the following:

Steps to reproduce:
a)	Open Office version – 4.0.1
b)	OS – Windows 7
c)	Recovery options = Set Auto Recovery information every 1 minute.
d)	Opened/created 4 new documents and entered text in each one.
e)	Opened Task Manager and shut down the Open Office application. This cancelled/shut down all 4 instances of Open Office with the 4 documents that I created.
f)	I then launched Open Office again and received the OpenOffice Document Recovery window with the 4 documents I was previously editing.
g)	I selected Start Recovery and found all four documents were recovered with the latest changes that I had made.

Follow Up Tests
a)	Attempt to reproduce on OO 3.4.0. If the bug is reproducible on 3.4.0 and not on 4.0.1 as I found, it possibly has been fixed in a later version.
b)	Since OpenOffice 4.0.1 is the current release version, I would recommend retesting OO 4.0.1 on a Windows Vista installation. Attempting to reproduce on the current release version will provide information if the bug is an OS specific problem.
c)	Vary the recovery time interval to verify the auto recover will recover at various save intervals. I set it to 1 minute to facilitate testing.

Testers Speculation
a)	Typically when the Windows OS shuts down and provides an option to save the files within a certain amount of time. Windows Vista (the OS) may not have sensed that AOO had edits that weren’t saved and shut down the application without prompting the user to save files.

Auto-recovery works as verified in issue 21891.

Check Tools - Options... - Load/Save - General - Save - Always

...create backup copy.
