Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 119993
Java 7 update 5 does not work on Windows XP 32 bits
Last modified: 2017-05-20 09:32:12 UTC
I have been aware @ Open Office, since my college years & took the initiative to download it & see what it's all about once again. After having installed Open Office 3.4.0 @ my HP Pavilion ze2000t & initiated it I wanted to know if the wizard component was available, since I create a lot of documents & enjoy using these wizards. So I clicked @ the menu @ File/Wizard & selected it. A dialog box appeared within a couple of seconds stating that the current Java file was corrupted & to check its status as well as re-install since it is required to function w/ the software. I took a print screen of the dialog box & saved it @ My Documents/Pictures. I would very much like your assistance w/ this matter, so that I may utilize the software in the manner in which it was designed.
I have downloaded 2x the current version of Java 7 Update 4 & installed it as a means to correct the issue. I continue to receive that same dialog error message.
The most recent release @ Java 7 Update 5 has as well generated the same error message.
(In reply to comment #2) > The most recent release @ Java 7 Update 5 has as well generated the same > error message. Which wizard are you trying to run? Did you select first a Java Runtime Environment from the Options Dialog? Menu "Tools" - "Options...", on the left tree select "OpenOffice.org" - "Java" You selected Windows XP as platform. Is it a 32 bits or a 64 bits WinXP system?
The wizard in which I'm attempting to access is @ the interface @ the menu @ File/Wizards/Letter @ which neither of these options are functioning due to the error. As far as the for the selection of a java the application if I'm correct preselects the installed JRE on the machine HP Pavilion laptop @ which I'm using the current version of Java 7 Update 5. I'm utilizing @ WIN XP Pro SP3 32-bit

Can you please upload the screen shot of this dialog box? I don't recall a message in AOO telling the JAR file is corrupted. Usually the message box shows a text telling the JRE is defective: English: %PRODUCTNAME requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. The selected JRE is defective. Please select another version or install a new JRE and select it under Tools - Options - %PRODUCTNAME - Java.
Created attachment 78349 [details] JRE Defective Dialog Box The attachment is the error dialog box w/ regards @ JRE. to which I'm receiving.
Created attachment 78350 [details] AOO 3.4.0 in WinXP with Java 7 u5 - Letter wizard works fine Letter wizard works fine on AOO 3.4.0, WinXP 32 bits with Java 7 u5
Created attachment 78351 [details] AOO 3.4.0 in WinXP with Java 7 u5 - Base works fine AOO Base works fine too
Just tested with Windwos XP 32 bits, AOO 3.4.0 and Java 7 update 5, both the wizards and AOO Base work fine. This might be the same as Bug 119525 on Windows 7, which I wasn't able to reproduce: Java works fine with AOO. Let's see if some else can confirm this bug.

Updating subject
After several hours back and fourth I finally found that was the installed extensions the culprits. To solve java related issues remove extensions one by one until you find the culprit one or ones. Maybe it is easier to say than to implement it, but extensions should not crash the main program, no matter how bad they behave: they should crash by themselves and let users know what is going on. Simply follow the advice in http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues "Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 support Java 7, which is the recommended configuration; but (especially on 64-bit Windows) you might receive warnings about the Java version being defective. In that case, download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package.
